Hey guys,

I'm currently in USA. Coming to India for a vacation in Dec. I have an old system at my place in India. I am thinking of buying a high end desktop now.

I wanted to buy a creative xifi xtreme music card, a 256 mb video card and 2 gb DDR ram here as they will cost me much cheaper here. My friends are saying that it's better I buy them there coz if they are damaged or something then it will be hard for my folks to ship them back again and stuff..

I think the part that's usually prone to damage because of the voltage fluctuations in India is RAM. What do you guys say? Do you think it's ok if I get the sound card and video card?Do you think they will work fine? Suggestions appreciated...

Most of the people here on TE do order stuff from US.

The things which ppl mostly get are CPU,GPU,Ram,CaseModding Stuff,Heatskink and so far i hardly know ne one has faced ne sort of problems.

It will be very cheaper in US and certain products that are exclusively available in US are not available here.

Also the cost here in India is a bit high.

AFAIK CPU , GPU , Ram will not have ne issues .

rather get the stuff from US and invest in a good voltage stabalizer or UPS which has voltage stabalization feature .

BTW's why u wanna spend on high end stuff when ur not going to be around ? ;) .

LOl quad lots of problems mostly with gfx cards. Chaos recently had some problems with his 9800 pro, funky with his 6800gt, saumil with his 6600gt etc. The problem is mostly with video cards. Ram , Cpu hardly have any problems. You can take your chances with the video card though. :)

Hey Blade i am really sorry i didnt knew that ppl had issues with there gpu's
that were imported from outside.

These are for my sister..she is goin to use them for a while

Anyways...thanks for all your input guys....

And blade, can you elaborate a lil bit on the kinda problems those guys had with their GPU's?

Two of the cards mainly chaos' and funky's died. And saumil broke his DVI. Actually if you not going to overclock the card and provide clean power to it then should be no problem.

hehe, actiually thats the main reason i was thinking of local purchase of graphic card. Thats the only quipment that i have imported given me any problems. My 5900U gave me real hard time. So did my originally imported 6800GT which went bad but luckily there was somone going to us within 15 days of the purchase and so i got store credit back and purchased card here.

RAM and CPU rarely go bad. And seriously if you are not gona be here for long then just pickup some value card like 6600 DDR2 there. or 6600GT/non GT here.

try to keep the costs under 25000rs in total of all the stuff ur getting.

Well id say get a nice mobo, and GPU man.. And Cooling stuff.. to keep ur hardware from heating up.. well get all that u can get:p.. and u neednt worry about voltage fluctuation in most cities but u could always use a good UPS... APC does a good job regarding this and especially during the rainy days/nights when u have a lot of lightning.. :p I never had a problem while my close-by neighbours had their UPS blow up:p on a very bad rainy night..

Sry, if i deviated from the topic.

But the gfx card prices are really absurd here, its absoultely makes sense buying a card in the US. In the case of high end card you are looking at the price will be nearly double here, so even if you get a card from US, it conks you can order another card and the cost will remain same.

Regarding cards conking, thats gonna be a case if you are using high end cards from any generation. An eg would be Geforce 3, and ATI Radeon 9600 both are from diff generations, Radeon 9600 is faster then Geforce 3, but chances of it conking are much lower. Also Chaos's card I believe is atleast 2.5 yrs old..

^^It was bought 6 months after the 9800 was launched. I managed to revive it with a generous dose of AS5 :). Its working again fine and dandy ;)

what about creative's xifi xtreme music card guys..?? Heard that it is costing around 12000. It's costing around $108 here..

^^ same logic applies as my previous thread, its more then double get one from US. if it conks get another, still would be cheaper...

Invest in a good UPS/surge protector (perhaps an online line interactive).....

And get whatever u want from the US.....generally RAM is the most suceptible....followed by HDD's and GPU's to any current anomalies....though CPU's are tough....

Get your card, memory and CPU from the US without any worries....
