Is it allowed to carry a victorinox swiss army knife?

I have a friend who carries one in his from jeans pocket every single day, and has never been stopped.

Unless you have the time and patience to explain to those frisk cops that the blade length is allowed, what is the point of carrying one. Those guys are dumb-a**** and have no rhyme and reason for rational logic. They will not understand you anyways.

Then how come is it that my friend carryies it everywhere, and those metal detectors never detect it?

What is the outer casing made of anyway?

Its upto your luck totally .. a Swiss Army knife doesn't look conspicuous at a glance. It would be passed off for a Keychain or something.

I'd think you will have more luck carrying in a backup, those xray security check guys are really the most careless anyway IMO.

Ya..they are quite lame the security guys. I have at times, seen them snoozing on the scanner screen side. And the frisking is complimentary. Quite idiotic. But they did question me once about a Braun shaver, I just signalled "shaving"; and they let me through.

I know about Kolkata metro, a couple of times I have seen people being stopped at the security and not allowed to board the train for carrying banned items (example crackers, scissors, etc). But have seen a lot of times people getting away too by giving BS reasons (law in India) and the person in duty saying "don't do it next time".

@AMG and @vivek.krishnan -- what's the reason behind carrying such things, as a handy resource / security purpose?

Yes.
A swiss knife can be used for many purposes if the need arises.

Self defence being one. Opening bottles another. Uncorking stuff, and many more.

^ I wasn't actually asking as a general question but to know what specific purpose your friend was using. Given the versatility of a Swiss army knife, using it for self defense doesn't seem to be practical. In a real emergency situation, one would need quite some time to whip out the knife. One would be a sitting duck while opening the blade portion of the knife, not to mention the chance of opening the wrong tool for the blade. In a life-or-death encounter with a thug on the street this time wastage would matter.

Well, I honestly dont know what he is using it for.

I am only concerned with
1: Is it legal to carry it in Delhi Metro?
2: If it isnt, why hasnt he been stopped since the past 4-ish months
3: Are those metal detectors absolutely useless?(since he carries it in his front jeans pocket, and that thing never beeps)

^ these two links should answer your particular queries:
http://www.delhicapital.com/delhi-metro/metro-guide.html
http://www.thedelhiwalla.com/2013/08/01/city-list-prohibited-items-delhi-metro/

No mention of any sharp objects or weapons (!!!) -- so Swiss army knife should be in the allowable list but "Any other article declared as dangerous or offensive material by the metro railway administration from time to time" -- so it can be blacklisted any day or on any given occasion by metro authority.

Have been stopped twice after they scanned it in my laptop bag, they may let you go but requires a lot of nagging. In pocket, chances are high that you may go unnoticed as there are lot of other stuff you can show them as a cause for beep.

Just keep it on his key - chain. It is fine. That security is lame.

Was reading an article in the Hindu after the Chennai blast. Section started by saying that The Metro (CISF actually) showed the way in maintaining high standards of security/screening.
These many cases registered, these many dangerous articles confiscated (A pistol being one!) and bunch of cases registered against some people.

I dont know how metro has been able to keep incidents at bay. The guy with the hand held metal detector does a sweeping check and never seems to ask about mobiles/loose change in the pocket.
