Hi Guys,

I presently have 5MBPS Connection through a wireless Device called NanoStation2, I can get about 20MBPS max on this connection.

I get about 600kB/s Download speed. My ISP ClassicNet Broadband recently showed me a promotion offer for switching to Fiber Optic Cable which coincidentally is right outside my apartment building.

The Price is not that high 5000 (one time) for the connection to their servers & 2200 (one time)for the Media Converter of some sorts which will be at my end

Do you think I should go for it? What will be the advantages of have OFC/ FOB whatever you call it? Anybody here at TE who has switched over from normal CAT5 / Wireless internet to Fiber Optic ?

Thanks.

Well... I am going to need good internet connection as my business grows... sooner rather than later. My Goal here is to switch to 10MBPS connection by the end of July this year. As i am not sure how this NanoStation will perform in Rainy Season.. So if I have to switch to O.F. I'd rather do it now.

All I want to know is what will be the Difference? as it cannot be speed as that will be constant as per my plan. But what about Quality & Response time / Ping's etc. Right now I get a C in pingtest will that change when i switch to Optic Fiber?

if the plans are good than its worth it.if they arent than look somewhere else.there are plenty of new isp providers in mumbai

@ aasimenator how much are you paying for your 5mbps plan???

Is it available in Thane???

Unlimited plan???

^ I pay Rs. 4800/- including S.T. & yes its Full Unlimited.

No Its not available in Thane or any where except for a few location in Andheri & Goregaon East

OK I can say I have some exp with FC's and internet coz that is how my dad gives out Internet connections in the area's adjoining us. So bottom line: If there is ethernet connection available then go for it, a FC doesnt add any kind of value to your connection.

If you wanna switch from Wireless to FC then I would always second that decision coz Wireless goes weird sometimes. But having said that check for the possibility of an ethernet connection, cheap and same thing u get. FC is not gonna boost your speeds :)

dude...how can you say no improvement on FC over Ethernet? i am not aware of switches and routers our operators use but if they have dedicated ports and uplink is also fiber then its going to improve his latency. yes speed will not improve as 5Mbps dosent put that much load on Cat5 or Cat6 cable. if distance is too much then fiber optic might help with packet drop and correction...

And since we are talking fibre optic I don't think so the OP is going to get a connection from a distance more than 200 mts. I mean anything beyond that and ISP's just refuse saying that its not feasible.

The reason I'm saying there is not improvement is imagine water pressure maintained at a certain limit through a 1 inch pipe. If you replace only the pipe and do not change the pressure, does it make any difference to the end user.. :)

As compared to wireless the OFC can certainly give you better pings/latency and even fewer packet drops.
And wireless is also largely affected in the rainy season / or by electrical signal disturbances. (have a bad bad exp of Tikona. They too used NanoStation).
I would say take a trial at a place nearby where they have installed OFC and decide accordingly...
