Switching to TATA Concerns/Help???

So those of you who have read my previous posts know how dissapointed I have been with Airtel broadband. I am currently on their Home 999 plan. I cant sit here and write songs about Airtel if 256kbps is all they can offer when the world is going 100 mbps. Its like living in stone age. I called their cc yesterday and enquired for one last time if they had any plans for unlimited users for greater speed.... and got the same old. Why does a home user need more than 256 kbps or unlimited downloads at 2mbps? I just told that guy why do home users need high powered cars, over 300 cc bikes, better roads, highways, better buses, phones, proper sanitation, , GPS navigation, 3G.... after all these amenities should just be for babu logs or companies!!! That poor bloke didnt even know what half these technologies stood for. This pathetic chalta hai attitude mentality of our companies sucks to the core.
In any case that was my final venting out of my frustration with Airtel, now moving on to TATA for HOPEFULLY some better bandwidth. 2 plans that I am currently considering are 512 kbps unlimited for 2k after tax or 240 hours @2 mbps plan for 2.5k. Now my question is, is the 240 hour plan worth it? I plan on consuming it every month... so that means that I can easily do 8 hours of downloading/browing everyday for 30 days. It also means that I can download more than I can from the 512 kbps plan and save time/electricity by having my pc off during the day when I am at work. Has anyone tried this plan and can you suggest if you do indeed get 2mbps speed.
Also I have read the thread that ppl are getting more bandwidth than promised with their Tata connection, how true is this?
Lastly, with Airtel I get a ADSL connection thats always on. What platform is TATA built on? I heard they keep disconnecting at night? Would I have to buy a netgear router or somethinng for an always on connection. Is login client based like Sify (in that case I would have to reconsider as I have plans for xbox 360 that needs an always on connection so no client logins hopefully). These are some of my questions that hopefully I can find answers for.

Lastly, kudos to Tata to be the only provider to offer 512 kbps for unlimited users. Its andho mein kana raja, very expensive, but I guess the only company that at least has something close to real internet on their menu. If it was upto Airtel I guess we all would be using internet just to browse and download emails :bleh:

I agree with you. I had contacted Airtel regarding their 2Mbps plans also. What I don't understand is that what is the purpose of providing a 2Mbps line with a download limit.

Plus, I think that charging 1K for 256kbps is quite high. I am willing to settle for 512kbps @ 1K also if they can provide that....or at least some double download time from 11-7 or something like that if they don't want to provide dedicated bandwidth. They are not even trying to give some extra value to the customer. I am fed up trying to negotiate with them.

Even I would rather download more for 8 hrs and give my PC a rest during the day(I'm doing this anyway.). I like my gaming system but trust me....keeping a 130nm fab 6800GT and 2 Raptors on overnight can cause some serious heating in my case and I don't even have proper cooling and a cramped cabinet(by todays' standard.). I don't even dare keep my system on for more than 8 hours straight.

I'm seriously thinking of building a download rig with a simple PCI gfx card and a 7200 rpm HDD or getting a cheap laptop for continuous 24/7 download(wonder if anyone has done this already...using a lappy for 24/7 download) I don't want to risk my main rig anymore.

Anyone using Tata Indicom UL n B'lore? Would help us also in making swiching decisions.

Yeah, I applied to Tata Broadband a week ago, their CC said they'll send in a person by 2-3 working days.

If this is a sign of things to come, man I'm scared! Going for 512k Unlimited.

tata CC is bad, airtel conneciton is bad
whats left? bsnl/mtnl any good?

This discussion has been done to death in plenty of threads earlier.

Still here's my take on it

2 Mbps = 256 KBps
BSNL Nite Unlimited = 6 hours (from 2 AM to 8 AM)
Theoretically possible data that can be downloaded = 256*60*60*6 KB
= 5400 MB

512 kbps = 64 KBps
Unlimited through the day = 24 hours
Theoretically possible data that can be downloaded = 64*60*60*24 KB
= 5400 MB

This means that you will be able to download the same data in a day by running your comp for 1/4th of the time if you are on BSNL/MTNL. Plus you have 2.5 GB of transfer limit. Plus at Rs 500 its at least half as cheap (not sure of the rates of other ISPs)

Now before i get flamed stating how crappy BSNL is let me just say that I am not recommending it to anyone. I know plenty of people have faced connectivity problems not to mention long delays in being provided a connection.

All I am saying is that on paper at least nothing comes close to it. Plus I personally have not had much problems with the connectivity. Yes it does go off sometimes but for me its like once a week or so and that too for maybe an hour or so. That I can live with.

The figures above may not translate in real life. I personally get only around 1600 kbps but even that is enough for me to download around 4 GB on average every day. Thats more than enough for me and I am one satisfied BSNL customer.

@vulc4n, I think that BSNL/MTNL are discontinuing the 2mbps speeds during the nite unlimited. A no. of people who were earlier getting those speeds on the NU plan are not gettin 'em now. So it cannot be take for granted.

Cheers!!

I applied for the same connection on monday and I have already signed everything and the tata people came and it is being set uo tomorrow.

^^Vulc4n - which plan are you on exactly? You said you getting 1600kbps average speeds....But isn't there a download limit on those plans where in you get such speeds...how come you manage to download 4 gb each day?

I'm on MTNL 590NU plan and while i do have no problems with the connectivity, i wish i could get more speed....earlier due to some glitch i was getting 2mbps, now my speeds are capped at 256kbps....any other better option in BSNL/MTNL?

I am on the Home 500 plan. There's a download limit of 2.5 GB per month but what you download between 2 AM - 8 AM is not counted in that. Am not really sure of the plans MTNL has coz BSNL doesnt have any plan for 590. While the speed may be capped in the future (if what AMD4life said is true) currently at least its no glitch since its been this way since Jan.

@Vulcan: Do you guys get full 2mbps on BSNL? Since it's only upto 2mbps,i was thinking they never give total 2mbps....

I had applied for Tata 256kbps 2 Months back.

I kept pestering them with phonecalls, and they never contacted me back :(.

Useless service I say.

Yeah even mine was 2mbps since Jan (downloaded close to 100gb in one month :) )...but since March6, i started getting 256kbps...so be prepared for this :) i'm getting the complete UL (949/- pm) now.

^^Waiting for a Delhi Tata feedback...

the service in delhi iz kinda gud and the installation ws also very quick.i'd called the CC and they snt a guy for registration on the same day and the installation ws dne by the next day...:hap2:

in terms of service tata is excellent... i got the connection the next day after placing the request...

I applied on a Sunday, and had my connection setup the following Thursday. Service has been good so far, with negligible downtime *keeps fingers crossed*

Tata indicom has improved their service by leaps and bounds in recent months .From the past 5 months ,had only one downtime touch wood :ohyeah: .That too was resolved within 24 hrs .I am pretty satisfied .BTW ,I am in Bangalore and on 512 Kbps unlimited connection.

I had a nightmarish exp previously within tata 9 months back and had to cancel the connection.Again opted for the connection becos no other provider in our area.has been a boon in disguise.:D

For guys who didnt recieve call back from the tata call centre , there is no coverage in your area .These guys tend to ignore you ,if they do not have coverage in ur area.

I am getting 53-60 Kbps consistently on torrents and 60 kbps while downloading .
