CPU/Mobo Symmetric Multi Processor question

Suppose I have a dual processor PC...
now obviously the processors are going to be of the same socket family, but do they have to be of the same type exactly?
Or can I say, combine two different processors (eg a low end Xeon with a higher end Xeon?). Again, there might be issues of what s/w can run if different intsr are supported (SSE3)

im not quite sure but i think they are exactly the same...it would make sense...im not sure tho if it is possible to run two slightly different types....intrigueing question though

it would certainly make for more specialised task management
