System Crash due to overheat.??

This may sound funny, but can a laptop crash due to overheating?cause one of ma fren's laptop crashed.. n he says tht it was used fr aroun 12 to 14hrs on the go..point to be noted here was the laptop was kept on the bed and used..so well you know the ventilation gaps for the mould ofcourse be blocked which would have caused the system to overheat...just ma theory..is it possible??
 
yup...as soon as temps soar high enuff..the cpu starts throttling...even after this if the temps continue to soar..the cpu forces a shutdown....
 
yes, it is possible esp if u kept it on a bed for long periods. Ideally, u can run it for a long time but it still needs to be well ventilated :) place it on top of a book or something n u shud be ok :)
