Well i had some time to kill and was thinking of learning Tally... So i thought some material beforehand would be helpful...

Well now that uv told me, i'll use the inbuilt help :)... Thanx a lot.

P.S. I have Tally 7.2 , do u by chance have the latest statutory masters for that??

@ rajshah u shouldn't have been talking about Tally when u don't know wht it does. Anyway, tally is an accounting software.

@xplicit is your use personal or for your own business or is it for building up skills to use in the mkt? If it's the former then would ask you to consider 2 worthy alternatives.

The 1st one is grisbi Its feature list includes managing multiple accounts, currencies and users. It manages third party, expenditure and receipt categories, as well as budgetary lines, financial years, and other information that makes it suitable for associations (except those that require double entry accounting).

The 2nd one would be Turbocash which has everything tht u could need from a small to medium business.

The problem with tally is if it breaks down there is no way to fix it. There are work-arounds but its tedious. I worked with tally sometime back & found it to be o.kish. Still win 95ish kind of UI, just didn't like it.

I agree with shirish on UI. Its pretty primitive and irritating at times. But Tally is pretty simple to use. I have been using it for my family account since last 3-4 yrs and its good. Pretty fast and data files are really small.

If you know accounts, you really don't need tutorials for Tally. Start doing it, if you face difficulty call their tech support (only if you have licenced copy :bleh:) and they will guide you. I have used their support a couple of times and its not bad.

I have been eagerly following AVSAP but haven't seen too much progress there.

good find there, the last news on the site seems to be on 2005-07-25 which is around a yr. back so seems to be dead. Also its listed under the GNU/Linux OSés while the ones I've given are cross-platform so people have more bang for their time. The idea being for people to use an application & then do the same in GNU/Linux :) If it was under the GNU/Linux then would 've said GNUcash as it does all that I need :)

@ shirish .. I know wat Tally does.. I use it for my office accounting.. casually.. started using it.. and learnt the stuff reqd on my own !!

I dnt knw wat the statutory masters does !! Thts wat i meant !!

I dnt possess indepth knowledge of tally or accounting !! But do knw it decent enuf to do my accounts !!

The software is released under GPL and is platform independant. Over View — Avsap - A Very Simple Accounting Programme

Also see Installation — Avsap - A Very Simple Accounting Programme
Operating system - Linux, FreeBSD, Mac, Unix and even Windoze

So it does give full bang for the time :ohyeah: :hap2:

Hey shirish thanx for those alternatives...

But i'm using tally for learning purposes.

AFAIK the Stautory Masters contain the latest updates regarding acocunting/tax rules (VAT etc.), am i right??

My stat.slk version is 31, and i think the latest is 41...

Although I don't have much idea about the Statutory Masters but do have a friend who constantly updates their Tally. If they don't have the latest Statutory Masters then will also get them to have it & relay the info. back here.
