Video Tata sky HD + or Dish HD ?

I am used to Tata Sky and am pretty happy with their Customer Support as well. I now plan to upgrade to a hd + dvr box. But my biggest issue is this- TS has only 5 hd channels, whereas Dish TV claims 30.
On the other hand I read somewhere that Dish TV's channels Might just be upscaled SD channels.

Can anyone shed some light on this ?
Are Dish TV's HD channels truly HD ? Does HBO, MTV etc give out true 5.1 Surround as well. This would be a major factor for me, as I do have a decent HT system.

any day tatasky stay away from dish what dishtv saying hd is upscale channels secondly i requested dishtv to install even after 9 days no one turned up and airtel installed within 2 days. I am also using tatasky and its working good no issues
 
dish tv is completely ***** !!

u get only 3 ...yes 3 hd channels namely travel xp hd,hd world discovery,nat geo hd...rest all claimed hd channels are just upscaled from SD channels.

lowest u have to pay per month is Rs450 :@ ... in other words it's mandatory to take platinum pack(Rs325) & hd starter pack(Rs125)=450 if u own an hd set top box
 
Tata Sky HD.

I have Tata Sky HD+, Tata Sky HD installed. Have tried Dish, Sun HD, etc but Tata Sky HD is the best.
 
^ A good time to migrate to TS+ HD. TS seems to be the best for HD content, don't fall for the gimmick of Dish's 30 upscaled HD channels.
 
I would prefer to wait (that's what I have been doing too). Right now, the HD content is really less to justify switching to either of the providers.
 
^ If you're looking for 20+ HD channels, then it's gonna be close to a year or so for it to materialize. If you've already spent decent money and bought a HDTV, but still using a SD STB, then the potential of the TV is being wasted, unless you're using it for gaming or HD media player. I would say, 7 HD channels, especially NGC, Discovery, Star World and Movies are really worth it.
 
Well, more than the number of channels, it really is about the content. I wouldn't definitely want to watch Star Plus in HD since I don't watch it even in SD. Movies I already watch on a HD media player. That leaves me with sports (not just cricket, SPORTS in general). Unfortunately, that is not available in India yet, and the low ROI means it would be sometime before such a thing begins here. I would also like the news in HD, though that is more because I watch news, and not because the extra clarity would help things.
 
^ NGC HD, Discovery World, IPL Set Max HD, Star Gold, Star Plus, Star World and Star Movies.

@agantuk I agree about the sports and news part. I watch news most of the time, would love to see some of them in HD and also F1 in HD. (Not a football buff, but I know many are waiting for football in HD too, at least cricket is taken care of as we're in India :P)
 
Dish tv is fraud hd, fooling customers with upscaled stuff. They are basically trying to change the definition of HD in indian markets. Thats pretty shameful stuff. Originally they have only 3 true hd channels.

Go for tata sky without a doubt as they have at present 7 true hd channels as i know. All true hd with 5.1 surroud sound. I use it and its awesome experience.

Also another thing to note is tata sky gives all these 7 channels in just 50 rs while dish tv is very costly like some hd channels costing upto 100 per channel.
 
First of all HD reception set is required to enjoy HD. I hope this is not too obvious. :P

Recently got the Tata Sky HD installed. I'm really impressed with the picture quality. NATGEO, Discovery, sony max cricket matches, star plus hindi serials, star movies, star gold just look amazing. SD content is different from HD content. Similar programs do not run in parallel. discovery SD programs are different from discovery HD.

star world seems to transmit upscaled content most of the time and so some hindi movies on star gold. need to set 4:3 manually on the TV to view it properly. STB can be set to display SD 4:3 content else displays as 16:9

After reading discussions on saveondish forums more HD content is planned on tata sky. Paid Rs.2599 only for STB. Booked as cash on delivery. i think CC payment offer free Rs.50 HD Gold package for a month.
 
^ I paid via CC for HD DVR and got one month free Grand Sports Pack worth Rs 380. I was also offered Rs 3600 for 1 year of Grand Sports, but didn't take it. 1 year Mega pack was offered for Rs 5300 and in this pack you get all the channels, currently available and future additions + HD pack and everything for a year.
