a friend of mine who is in Chennai for a few weeks needs Internet access on his laptop during this period.
Now the only reasonable option he can think of is getting an Airtel prepaid connection and usig their GPRS service to connect...

Slow, alright but works I presume....
Would Anyone using Airtel GPRS in chennai be kind enough to tell me the details...

wudnt a reliance prepaid connection be a better idea? am not sure though..

Edit:

er.. u'l have to invest atleast 2k on a new CDMA set i think.. GPRS is the cheaper alternative.

yup, buying a new CDMA set just for a couple of weeks makes no sense even though it's at least 2X faster (rather Airtel is 2X slower)

PS: Why the new Avatar?

a data card (reliance/tata Indicom) wud be even more expensive, aint it? but thats and ideal companion for a lappy on the move i guess.

Zimbly!

this is actually meant to be just a temp arrangement....and anyway, data cards still come only in PCMCIA while the world (including him) have moved to expresscards

airtel gprs activation takes a loooong time. i bought the 250rs airtel gprs recharge coupn and recharged on friday morning. till now its not active.

crap service/

in mysore , i got airtel GPRS for my phone. it cost just 150 (3/day) and later 100/month :D

i was on airtel prepaid. It was activated within a day. Service was depended on time of the day. was slowest at peak hours, slow otherwise.content was mostly images ;);) and yahoo chat . Dont know if having an EDGE phone would make a difference though. a friend of mine here in TVM mentioned a significant boost over dialup :P with the edge on his N series phone :)

I have hutch GPRS, but I use it only in my mobile phone (not connecting it to PC). 50/month rental + 10paise/10kb usage charges

abhi... airtel gprs is the best option as of now i guess... and if i know that "friend" of yours, i wud rather suggest we talk on pm or in mail... :P i will tell u the details...

airtel gprs is hard to get activated once.. after that, u can easily keep recharging for Rs.375/ per month or for Rs. 20/- daily for unlimited internet access...

Nah, I'm using a Tata Indicom USB Modem, size of a pendive, and it connects at 230 kbps, downloads at about 15KBps, which is damn decent.

Initial cost is 4k though, better stick to GPRS ;)

i used airtel GPRS for few days when i didn't have broadband connection ...... connection suck bad but that was my non EDGE phone ...... if his phone supports EDGE then speeds will be good ....... i was charged 20rs per day or 70rs per week ....... i am not too sure about the cost tho .....
