I'm in real panic situation.

till yesterday night my seagate 500gb was working in perfect condition.

bt today when i powered the pc , bios showed a warning --primary hdd smart failed. Press del.

I disabled the smart and was shocked to see this in hdtune & Hard Disk Sentinel.

it says health & life 0% :O

wtf?

nothing happened yesterday...no power failures no data corruption. In fact just used pc for an hr for surfing purpose.

All partitions r working smooth. Even backed up data on another drive which went smooth without any disk/sector/r/rw errors.

So is the only solution to simply rma or should i try some tools to fix the issue?

** this hdd is the revised st 500 7200.12 not the previous problematic. 7200.11.

using it since 14months.

give it for RMA.... if your data was important then you can give it to some data recovery company but they'll cost you a bomb..... my advice is give it for RMA and get it replaced.....

12 hrs is nothing. one of old my disks died after making a full format of it. just rma it. the disk will get more and more bad sectors till it completely stops.

And imo its not a good idea to disable smart in bios.

This is my horrible HDD failure of Seagate 7200.12 500GB. I was assembling new system with pretested 500GB 7200.12 in HDTune, everything went smooth till the installation and data copy. In two -three hours HDD started showing signs of death, Failed in BIOS, slow boot, sudden hangups, finally a red disk in tests. The dealer was very cooperative, replaced HDD with a new piece. Again I did pretesting in HDtech, Hdtune seatools then installation of windows 7, data copy work. To my surprise this one also failed in just 5 hours. I was like WTF at that time, well again went to the dealer and he again replaced with sealed piece. This piece busted in flat one day. Now I gave up on 7200.12 , may be whole 7200.12 lot with the dealer was faulty. Finally I replaced 7200.12 with WD 500GB and successfully did the installation.

seagates have a tendency to fail. they are not very sturdy. W.D. has some of the sturdiest ones. Hitachi aint bad either. i hae a hitachi 80GB and its super OK. still gives 70MB/s Read/Write

i ran the seatools and it says

SMART has been tripped, there is no need to run a test. The drive should be replaced.

wtf? i'm still going mad how come such terrible thing could occur without any valid reason!!!
