Unique Cartoon Shooter Introduces a New Way to Play Battlefield

Munich, Germany, January 21, 2008 – At the Digital, Life, Design Conference (DLD) in Munich, Electronic Arts Inc., (NASDAQ: ERTS) today unveiled Battlefield Heroes™, an all-new Play 4 Free cartoon-style shooter that will bring classic Battlefield gameplay to an all new mass audience. Available for download at Battlefield Heroes™ this summer, Battlefield Heroes is EA's first title that is offered completely for free, and features a built-in matchmaking system to ensure that players of equal skill are paired together for fair play. Developed by DICE in Stockholm, Battlefield Heroes is leading EA's new web-focused free to download, free to play business model which generates revenue through advertising and micro-transactions. With zero barriers to entry, now anyone can be a hero on the battlefield!

“Online gaming garners a massive audience,” said Gerhard Florin, EVP Publishing Americas-Europe at EA. “People want to play games in new ways, with easier access that is quick to the fun. With Battlefield Heroes, EA brings its first major franchise to North America and Europe with a new distribution model and pricing structure adapted to the evolving way that people play.”

Battlefield Heroesâ„¢

Battlefield Heroes is a brand new game from the team behind Battlefield 1942â„¢ and Battlefield 2â„¢. It's fun cartoon-style graphics and gameplay caters to players of all skill levels. It is easy to pick up and play but with robust character customization and a deep online meta-game, gamers can spend hours building up their characters and conquering the world.

“We put a different twist on this Battlefield game going with the cartoon-style graphics and gameplay,” added Ben Cousins, Senior Producer at EA DICE. “There's something here for all types of players -- be it our core Battlefield fans or casual gamers. With the new online model, we will continually add new content to keep the game fresh and keep players engaged, while integrating player feedback in real time. As a game developer, it is such a cool new way to make games.”

Battlefield Heroes will be released for the PC as a free download in summer 2008. This product is not yet rated by PEGI or ESRB. For more information on EA DICE, please visit DICE or EA - Action, Fantasy, Sports, and Strategy Videogames.

i dunno how its gonna work out . but free is always good :)

this sounds cool. Free online games rock dude. Lot of people still play "Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory" and "Trackmania Nations" bcoz both the games are good and free. Lets hope the game is good enough to play.

I'm now a big fan of online war games. Warhawk is taking all my gaming time these days (No.12 in Zones mode worldwide, muahaha!) I thought I'd give UT3 a chance too but I'll pass on it, was hoping for PC-PS3 crossover online play, but instead I'm now waiting for Battlefield : Bad Company now (India is one of the factions in it). Hopefully they'll port this free title to the PS3 too, it'll serve as a good time pass but doubt it it'll be that great (as great as TF2)

It'll never come close to the FUN factor that TF2 generates ,it takes more than just cartoonish graphics and a few soldiers to pump in the adrenalin that TF2 brings about !

the screenshot seems more likeTF2 heavy gunner.

i don't know what EA up to but since all gamers like free stuff i might be in just for the ride apart from that coming up with such an idea just after the release of TF2 seems more planned out.

may be its EA's plan to buy out Valve or the source engine. Its like how Cryengine 2 is official EA property now. may be source engine 2 will be bought over by EA who knows.

its been delayed a few times. it's only slated for next year. No specific date given though. The few vids ive seen didnt look too entertaining...apart from the bit where you can take potshots from the wing of a plane.

Doesn't look THAT interesting, but maybe I'm just saying that because I'm comparing it to TF2.The animations/character designs looks good, but no where as unique as TF2.
