The bane of betting apps everywhere!

Mastermind
Anyone watching live cricket on JioCinema must have seen atleast 50 of these betting ads in just 2 days. One of the main sponsor of IPL is a betting app company. Plus lot of YT channel creators are pushing these ads a lot. Apparently they get a lot of money from such ads.
Saw this on YT and I have to say, these companies are like a menace to society. Govt might as well open up casinos in India if they allow such companies to exist. Might as well build our very own Las Vegas type city here. Any BJP guy here? Give Modi that idea.

I've got such sms etc on Google messages app a lot. I'm sure Google is the one pushing such useless ads to our phones. I had disabled data for messages app but every update the setting gets enabled.

Out govt. actively supports such crap. Instead of banning other shit they should first ban on making of such apps.
We have no protocol in this respect and thus every dom dick harry from every lane comes up with his own apps.
IT should heavily tax such earnings so much that people should stop using them. But govt. wants to loots the honest man not such biz people.

The number of such apps exploded after one of the court gave decision in favour of dream11 against the legality of its business.

I see this BS even on apps like Cred. "Spin the wheel and win this many Rummy/Poker points".

Such Horseshit.

Gpay gives out a lot of "rewards" for dream11, rummy and other such betting apps. Easy way to trap unsuspecting victims who play for a few times because it was just their "winning" they are betting with. That is how it begins for quite a few.

I see ads for these apps in metros and buses too.

Our society would either pretend this problem doesn't exist or straight up ban everything instead of laying down proper rules and regulations.

These apps are worse than casinos. They can monitor your behaviour and keep luring you in based on data they have gathered by offering you free coins etc. You can walk away from slot machine. You can't walk away from your phone.

They term it smartly "Responsibile Gambling"
This online gaming gained momentum with Facebook and zynga over virtual gambling more then decade ago when Facebook was only available on desktop (rise of Firefox and death of internet Explorer)

Zynga used to make over 5 million US$ a day from its single game poker (that too virtual currency)

They allowed transfer of upto 30, 000 US$ a day from there so called VVIP customers via wire transfers only.

There are soo many facts scatered about zynga spread across internet.

At some time in past zynga setup it's offices across 180 countries, now just imagine how big this market is.

This is still safer or just beginning in India, as TRAI has restricted Telecom companies to let customers use money from there mobile balance, allowing this will create more havoc..

This topic will get interesting if we can add more facts/figures/research..

Uninstall the app. Block related calls or messages?

They used to have lotteries earlier. But the wives of the poorer classes went and hammered local politicians because their men were blowing their entire salaries and so state by state they all got banned. Some still allow them.

Personally I learnt my lesson at a young age. Dad gave me some money to play with. Half an hour later I had 10x. Can't forget the high showing him the win.

Half an hour later it was all gone. Can't forget the low that was like.

So quitting when ahead didn't work like people around the table advised. I had to go back to that slot machine to win more.

Can someone explain to me how these "fantasy" gaming/gambling apps adverts that I keep seeing during IPL breaks actually work?

I know that it's definitely nothing like the actual online casinos that are present in the US and europe with slots, online blackjack and what not (or maybe I'm wrong)

What exactly are the "chips" in these apps? Where or what is it that the house always ends up winning in? If it is straight up gambling then how come there hasn't been any action taken yet, I thought "gaming" in the sense of gambling was banned.

Very relevant thread. Its the sign of our times in some ways. Easy money policies of the central banks led to speculation everywhere in financial markets first. Then came crypto which pretended to solve the issues that it ended up propagating further. Add to it NFT. Luckily the RBI stood tall against Crypto so the government eventually backed down on promoting that (after back and forth on a bill to promote "innovation" in that space). However, the way betting is picking up, I would say it is a good indicator that retail investors are still in high froth territory behaviorally, and it isn't likely to end well for them in markets either (let alone betting).

I expect that the government will eventually act against betting after it is too late, many people are hurt, and the problem becomes too obvious to ignore. Then it will also pretend to be a savior against the menace.

The arguments of these "gaming" companies is that "skill"is needed to win in these schemes, not just luck. So it is not exactly gambling.

Now anyone following cricket for more than one match knows how much it is skill and how much luck when predicting the number of runs one batsman makes in a match. Even some judges in our courts are fond of cricket, they know that it's a scam going on.

Greed taking over sports, like everything else in existence, is inevitable. Have personally stopped watching IPL since 2020 except highlights maybe. Going cold turkey this year.

TechEnclave feels different though. Good to see sanity prevailing here. In many developed nations, betting has been a "cultural" phenomenon for centuries. They take pride in this.

I learnt my lesson when I won 100 rupees from a lottery ticket my mom had bought. Went to the lottery shop to claim the full 100 rupees but got only 50 back and he forced me to buy 50 worth of lottery tickets. I countered saying I don't want to buy his lottery tickets then he said this is how it works. If you want 100, go to the lottery dept 100km away or just take 50 here and 50 worth of tickets. Had to take up his offer since why bother travel so far and spend more on travel for 100? Needless to say the 50 worth of tickets were worthless. I told myself never fall in these stupid schemes again. ( I forgot in between when the Playwin thing started and bought tickets 4-5 times but the chances of winning made me lose any hope in it) Playwin was like last nail in coffin type of experience. 10 rupees ticket - 2Cr win but the odds of winning was 1 in millions. Then it really went into my head how the system is rigged in the company's favour.

A building adjacent to my house have a huge banned space and they replaced the old banner with some betting app advertisement just couple of days back.
