Right now AMD has better chips at mid and high end. But thats for the time being through the last few years, depending on the price points both Nvidia and AMD had better offering respectively.
However Nvidia did have better driver support for Linux, last time I had checked (been 2 years since then..) For windows AMD actually has become more frequent and quicker in updating the drivers, but cant complain for Nvidia either. Used 2 Nvidia and 2 ATI chips, currently am on an extremely VFM Nvidia chip (9600GT).
