DAC or an amped DAC makes lot of difference in sound compared to onboards or even a good soundcard like Xonar DX. A good DAC has better detailing, soundstage, stereo separation, more power to drive higher impedance headphones.

Okay, I kind of understand that but if Im using an ipod touch as my sound source, will an amp be of much help?

if its a high-impedance speaker, amp will really help it, but wont help something like a 16ohm iem like tf10,re252

Some IEMs / Headphones benefit from amping or are hard to drive. If you own / plan to buy any of those, you need an amp, otherwise not.

I didn't understand how much of a difference an amp could make until I got an E5 which is pretty low end as far as amps go. I didn't get why people would bother with the hassle of extra wires and bulk of a portable amp. But with just one listen I was converted, so yeah it helps :D

The aesthetics and convenience does take a hit though.

Okay I have a Klipsch s4, a skullcandy ink'd, creative ep630 and a new senn hd202, which one should I really need an amp for? And any suggestion for a starter amp?

The HD202 will really benefit from an amp. Its bit hard to drive can.

E7 is not just an AMP. Its an amazing DAC, so even for low impedance high sensitivity earphone/HP its lot better than onboard and most sound cards. The sound stage and detailing will be much improved.

Desktop Headphone Amplifier E9 can act as 'docking station' so to speak for USB DAC/Headphone Amplifier E7. E9 raises the maximum headphone impedance from 300 ohms to whooping 600 ohms and makes it capable of driving some serious high impedance headphones. At 300 ohms, E7 was not exactly capable of driving them. For comparison, HD650 is 300 ohms and my mediocre HD555 is only 120 ohms.

E9 also has a 6.35mm out and a gain switch(10dB and 18dB)-something that E7 has been missing from other entry level amps like HUD-MX1. It can pre amp with volume knob acting as the output level control(0-2vrms). Along with E7 you can take advantage of Wolfson DAC. E9 can charge E7 as well. E9 as a docking station makes more sense if you want to add E7 to your portable set-up. What I would like to know is whether line out will work with headphone out and whether limit on 48kHz / 16bits is removed as the Wolfson is able to handle higher bit rates(not that I would find any use for it)?

@orangewrath: Out of the four, I think(never used an amp before) S4 can perform better with an amp. It has a good bassline and probably when coupled with an amp can bring out those lower frequencies. Why don't you audition E3/E5 and then decide?

The hd202 have an impedance of 32ohm, and the s4 have 18ohms, although the product description on the FiiO website says it says the E3/E5 - "Designed for high impedance and low sensitivity headphones", Im confused!

HD202, even tough specified as 32Ohs, its much higher than that for sure, as its difficult to drive than 64Ohm RX900 which i owned. You can use HD202 with a PMP or a PC, but when used with an amp, its really a step up and you will be amazed with the difference.

Well,

Part 2 Of The Video Would Be Up Soon And i Am In Personal Touch With the reviewer .

Im in for sure if it falls under 7~8k :)

i fear if my E7's 3.5mm jack will become loose fit as i frequently connect and disconnect HPs. It seems bit loose than when i got it. E9 will have 6.5mm which is more sturdy. :)
