:) Some real help needed. A few months back I had purchased an acer 5583 series laptop for my bro. Back then I had changed the ram(1 GB ddr2 553 to 667) at the showroom.
The problem:
My bro who is a non-techie(a journalist took it to hyd).He has been facing problems after the 1st month. These include
1. Slow startups.
2. The internal modem not working a few weeks back.
3. Random crashes etc.
Now he is bangy and I formated his system installed a fresh copy of win xp sp2 and has run a no of tests including primes stress test for 3.5 hrs 3D Mark 2003 sisoft sandra stress test. None of them seems to have any probs..He is playing games also flawlessly.Even the internal modem. is working
What could have been the problem?
His uses:
1. Torrents for movies
2. Normal ms office
3. Music
4. Playin a few games(ea cricket and all) .
Could it be because of some viruses, a corrupt os or any other reason?
He was very unhappy for the last 4 months and I was at the receiving end:)

Just ask what torrents is he downloading..
For example:Recently a Beowulf movie torrent had appeared in IsoHunt, which say itself to be dvd rip ..blah blah..But actually it is a virus....
So many a times, it is wise to read the comments which many would have posted for the torrent. It could be he would have downloaded some torrent, which installen some virus, trojans and gradually the performance decreases.

yeah awe is right,, u SHUD read the comments, i downloaded OSO n it was a password rar file renamed avi...shuks...

certanly a virus or a driver prob,,,install a good antivirus...recommendation- kaspersky..

:) He was actually using Kasperesky. Can a virus make even the internal modem to stop working :P
Even I had a suspicion that there was a prob with the drivers or some virus :(
Any specific ways of protection for a guy who may be downloading a lot of torrents. He will do that and I need to suggest some ways ...
He is an absolute non geek so do not suggest something very technical..
Thanks a lot to all for the suggestions

@raj_pol:
Yeah a very good way of restriction,,,is give less permission to your brother on OS. Make him a limited user.
1. Create a separate account in XP, with limited user account...anyway ur brother is a non-techei...so he must be torrent downloading movies, audiobooks, ebook, documentaries etc.
2. Request him to search net, and read some thing on the software he wants to install. He can get a fair idea about what it is.
3. Ask you before installing anything, so that u can tell him whether it is necessary to install.

:) He is not that bad:P :P He knows about updating his antivirus etc
Anyways he is here on holiday and will leave soon....I don't know if I will ask him to leave the laptop with me for a month or send it with him
Apparently it is working fine now :P
