I wanted a simple NAS + torrent machine which takes very little power and which is faster than most of the cheaper NAS boxes which are affordable and I went this way :

This really works for my RAID1 NAS. The write/read speeds are not as high as reported there, but very respectable.

The problem is the transfer speed even on a Gig E network. With ubuntu, the write speed increase 2x times when compared to the freenas version. There is some improvements in the reads as well. But both the setup are better than similarly priced commercial NAS boxes.
