A single PS4 console costs Sony around $381 to make - AllThingsD has found out. When the PS4's predecessor launched back in 2006 - it was being sold at a loss as Sony thought that they'd recoup the money via titles being sold. This 'teardown' is being done by the research firm IHS, who have done several such investigations before.

IHS analyst Andrew Rassweiler said “This chip is just gigantic - It’s almost three times as big as the next biggest chip we’ve seen. “It looks like once again, when it comes to profits, it’s all about the game titles,” Rassweiler said. The AMD chip which features on the PS4 is 350 square millimeters, making it the physically biggest chip that the research firm has ever seen built on the relatively new 28-nanometer manufacturing process. In actuality - bigger is not better as more area may mean there are more chances of failure.

So once again, Sony is backing its software to come to it's rescue, as now after advertising and overheads - even after selling for $399 the console is making a loss, although a monumentally minute loss if compared to the last time with the PS3 ($805 v $600).
