SAW: The Video Game

Preview: In Saw, The Jigsaw Killer has healed Detective David Tapp (Danny Glover) from his gunshot wound, and places him in an abandoned insane asylum to teach him a lesson of life appreciation. Obsessed, Tapp traverses the asylum and gathers clues along the way in hopes of finally apprehending Jigsaw. As he progresses through the asylum, he encounters several people with past and current connections to him, whom he must save. The asylum also has inhabitants who are in games of their own. Along the way, Tapp also uncovers the origins of Jigsaw and his motives behind his tests. The development team brought in the Saw creators James Wan and Leigh Whannell to write a new storyline and create new trap designs exclusive to the game.

Platforms: PS3, X360 & Microsoft Windows.

Type: Third-person survival horror.

Game engine: UE 3.0

SAW II: Flesh & Blood

Preview: Saw II picks up right after Saw and is set between the second and third films. It features David Tapp's son, Michael, as the new protagonist as he searches for clues behind his father's death. In doing so, Michael becomes a target of the Jigsaw Killer and his mysterious apprentice Pighead. The game expands technically on the previous game, also using the Unreal Engine 3. Gameplay improvements also include the ability to use the environment to combat enemies and a robust and redone combat system based on quick timing and defensive techniques.

Platforms: PS3 & X360.

Type: Third-person survival horror.

Game engine: UE 3.0

Began SAW I yesterday, completed the first chapter and it has been a very good experience by far. The usual elements of horror are present. Level design is amazing. Voice acting is okay'ish. Traps are awesome (some of them exclusively designed for the game!) and we need to guide Tapp to get out of them successfully. Frequent encounters with the pighead, plenty of doors rigged with the shotgun etc. to name a few of the better elements in the game. The game kicks off with the infamous reverse bear trap v1.0! :ohyeah:

Must play for all the fans of this gore-fest franchise! Saw II was received pretty badly though. :P

Half way through the first title. Completed Amanda's chapter, Jennings' chapter, Melissa's chapter and Oswald's chapter. The traps and puzzles in the game are pretty interesting. Some of them have a countdown timer so if we do not solve the puzzle until then, the trap is activated a la the movie.

Ran into a trophy glitch after having completed half-way through. Had earned almost 60% of the trophies and then the PS3 got stuck after the completion of Oswald's chapter. Had to restart the console and BAM! All the earned trophies went. :(

Not more than 10-12 hours. Once you figure out a puzzle or a trap, the second time is always easier. :P

You've got to rely on the flashlight like mad since most levels are played in the dark. Sometimes pisses me off. :@

I think much of it is to do with the Central Theme to aid in the Look and Feel of the Game :P .. if its mostly Dark then i am gonna miss out a lot on my puny dell2311u ,bty Does the Darkness hinder/hamper the game play?

^Nope. You have the Zippo, a camera (sucks but true! :P) and later a flashlight to aid you. The first title is worth it if you loved the SAW franchise. :)

No it won't. I have completed the first game on my 24 inch Dell and it didn't affect anything. You don't have a lot of areas to explore. Most of them are confined areas which you can easily traverse. The traps and puzzle solving is what you need to focus on.

The last chapter remains. :ohyeah:

Had a tough time in one of the chapters solving a puzzle, which involved 2 9x9 circuits, 1 3x3 circuit and a pipe circuit to shut down the gas mains in under 7 min. 30 seconds. Had several lockers strewn around the level and each time, the knobs were found at a different locker. Got it right the 4th time. :@

^Nope. Why? Did you happen to use one? The puzzles were fairly simple IMO. Requires a bit of thought but that is pretty much about it.

I used the walkthrough for numerous puzzles. I guess my backlog then was so huge that I was short on time, so rushed into this one. :ashamed:

I once got stuck at the last but one chapter saving Jeff from the wall of spikes. Did not know what to do with those TVs displaying random images. Then gave it a couple of tries, and out of luck the hacksaw matched with the severed leg image and one of the spikes retracted from his body. Voila! :D

Completed the game just now. It has 2 separate endings and by simply loading the last save point, one can opt for the second ending. The ending following the Truth door was awesome! :O

The rest of the movies in the series follow the other ending though. i.e the Freedom door. It clearly shows how Tapp saved the rest of the people from the asylum and was greeted as the hero as evident from the newspaper clippings. Like Jigsaw, later mentions he could never overcome his obsession and commits the suicide later.

Not sure if I would take up SAW II: Flesh & Blood soon though but would definitely give it a shot nonetheless. Got LBP 1 up next! :D
