The Sony Vaio CB15 Review

Since the last 2 months, i was on the lookout for a feature laden laptop based on Intel's
second generation core series of processors[codenamed SandyBridge]
but the cougar point scandal delayed my plans and finally in April the laptops began to trickle.
As of now there two contenders in the budget-performance segment available in India...The dell xps15/17 and the Sony Vaio CA & CB series.

What prevented me from going for dell was their slightly higher price, & the lack of a vga port.

The Vaio C series is known for its loud colours

So, on 12th april I finally added a new member to my digital family...the all new VAIO CB15FG .I opted for the only decent tone in the gamut..Black.

My Vaio:

The laptop came in a briefcase like box, and was bundled with some very thin manuals, a 6-cell battery and an adapter.
what i did not like is sony dosent bundle either a windows dvd or their driver dvd!
Hullo Mr. Sony, i paid for the software too!
now let me run through the construction:

The colour is black, but the construction material is a translucent plastic, so depending on the lighting it does look deceptively blue..had fun watching my friends argue on whether its black or blue:P

on the front is the card reader, which accepts memory stick[pro/duo], SD,MMC.
the power light which indicates on/sleep/off states
the charging light which is on while charging and blinks when the lappy is low on juice.
the HDD activity light.
The physical wireless switch, which turns on your Bluetooth and WIFI.

on the left is port for charging, a LAN port, Vents, VGA port HDMI port,a USB 3.0 port & a USB 2.0 port respectively. The usb ports are a little tight, but i think they'll loosen up after some use.

the right side presents us with standard 3.5mm audio & mic ports, a DVD writer of the tray type[would have appreciated had it been of slot type] and a Kensington-lock port

Sony has provided a backlit keyboard with this one, and i gotta say its a very useful feature which is big on the cool-factor.
Whats more? its a full-featured kb replete with the numpad on the right, which, incidentally is missing in the Dell XPS.
My only worry is that there are gaps below the keys, through which dust can easily pass and settle on the LED backlights.

The fullhd screen takes the cake though. Its quite brilliant when set on top 4 notches of its brightness control, and the graphics look crisp and sharp.Having some months of experience with the Dell w+rg led display, i can say this one is on par with it.
The colours look a teeny bit faded compared to the desktop counterparts, but i haven't come across a laptop without this problem.
The speakers are a bit of a letdown though, which need a considerably quiet room to be audible.Luckily for me they weren't a priority as i won't be using this one much for entertainment.

Overall Build Quality: The build seems pretty solid, with hard plastics used wherever its structurally important. The translucent material is just for aesthetic purposes. No creaking was noticed when pressed at the joints.
The glossy exterior is a fingerprint magnet, so wiping it frequently is mandatory.Luckily the surface is hard enough to not get scratched in the process.
the keyboard is rock-solid near the outer edges, with just a teeny weeny flex at the dead center, but again thats the bane of all laptop kind in general.[except the thinkpads, though]
the multitouch-capable touchpad is sensitive enough, and the physical click buttons are a boon.helps avoid false touch registrations.
what i wouldv'e liked, though is for the hinges to be of metal.but sigh! you cant have everything, can you?

Ran a quick windows experience test on performance mode, and here are the results.
I suspect the lowest score of 5.3 in aero performance was due to the laptop not switching between intel hd3000 graphics and the ati 6630m.

The laptop came with a typical rectangular laptop-bag, which is of reasonably good material with two main compartments, enough top store the lappy, adapter, mouse, external storage and a coupla magazines and documents so that your laptop stuff goes wherever you go

As reported by pauldmps later in this thread:
An important update.

There had been issues running OpenGL programs on the dedicated GPU since AMD Dynamic Switching only allows integrated GPU to run OpenGL programs.

Sony has released a BIOS update to allow a fixed mode so that any GPU can be selected manually, solving the problem. Unfortunately, the BIOS update was meant for VPCCB29xx models, so the installer fails when using the official update installer.

Some fellows of Notebookreview forums have successfully extracted the BIOS installer & now it can be installed on our laptops.

Download this: https://rapidshare.com/files/199430895/EP0000250856.zip

Don't worry, it absolutely safe to use the update. Just run the UpdTW64.bat in Windows & reboot when done.

There is a huge improvement in battery life (mare than one hour added) when using IntelHD since now the AMD GPU completely shuts off. Also you can now choose to always use AMD GPU when on AC power.

tried this and got a confirmed battery boost of arnd 1hr running on only intelHD graphics.

Guys just to add on my previous request, i m looking forward to purchase an external HDD precisely 500GB will be worth to have.
Was navigating few site and found a real good deal for it over letsbuy.com, follow below link.

Buy Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex 2.5 USB Kit Black 500GB at Best Price in India - Also find Specifications, Photos, Features & Reviews

Is their any other product i can prefer to or above HDD will solve my purpose and advance enough.. Though i have heard to use USB 3.0 connectivity for data transfer one need to have 3.0 USB ready cable or eSATA cable (BTW do Vaio CB15 Series have e-sata port)? as this will be quite faster in terms of data transfer. Any suggestions ?

^^ No e-sata, only an USB 3.0 port. The blue one.

Thanks Mate for this information. Is there any normal standard breakup of 500GB HDD else we may create as many drive as we can depending upon size allocation.

what about updates? is it recommended to install those updates? i havent felt any great use of that.

I have got MS Security essential Anti Virus free subsrciption for 3 years :) thinking whether its good enough to secure my daily downloads from diff web site or should i move to McFe or Norton.. any advise guys.

I am using MSE since it was released. And believe me, it is one of the best AV products out there.

Guys, can you advise how i can create my own OS bootable disk out of lappy.. is there any standard practise.. my worry is in case i need to format all my drives or in case of any system crash.. how i can restore my lappy with defualt factory settings and in back at original state.

PS: Where i can get my Win 7 product Key? :)

^You can use something like Acronis and create an image of the hard drive. Product key should be on a sticker below the laptop

Burn recovery disks using Vaio Care software. It will take 3-4 DVDs.

Product key, as Bottle said, is on the COA below the laptop. Internet activation doesn't work for my Product key (dunno why). You'l have to activate over phone.

Many thanks mate.. i had checked and found the product key (how silly i m , the day i have purchased the lappy, i have never turn the lappy up side down :) ) .. i have purchased external HDD so planning to take an image of the system on my External HDD .. hope that will solve my problem.. will go through some sections here which will help in guiding on how to make bootable OS cd (pl share if you have some link)..

Looking forward to download som FHD stuff but afraid as i have read somewhere that downloading movies from Torrent will end up downloadin viruses too.. so any suggestion or any less infected url which give FHD without penetrating virus.:ohyeah: i m sounding quite demanding

i installed the update, but where do we get the option to choose the gpu and keep it in fixed mode?

^^silly question. now i see a host of new options in the existing catalyst control center, which makes you as...why dint they include this before??

Faulty implementation of Dynamic Switching by AMD. They were trying to compete with NVIDIA Optimus & so rushed a half-baked product to the market. Unlike Optimus AMD's dynamic switching did not support running OpenGL applications (like Photoshop, SketchUp) on the dedicated GPU. Also, the AMD card did not completely shut off when not in use, hogging battery.

Sony first failed to acknowledge the problem, then shipped newer manufactured laptops with the newer BIOS while not providing the update to older ones. They released the update for other models without mentioning ever that it fixes the problem.

It was that a few guys at Notebookreview compared BIOS versions of different users, found this out & took the risk of installing a BIOS update meant for a different model. And it worked!

Stupid Sony, stupid AMD.

Are you getting any improvement in battery life ?

Enhanced battery Life confirmed!
got 4 hrs on a mixed usage[2 hrs of surfing/coding/photoshop+ rest for downloading with screen closed]
normally it wouldn't have lasted for more than 2.5-3 hrs, heck i used to get max 4hrs for downloads only with no screen usage before!
great find pauldumps.

I 'm not too much sure if mine lappy came with latest BIOS upgrade. But still i have run above batch file and re-started the machine. Under Catalyst Control have found the options to select the Integrated GPU (Power Saver) and Discrete GPU (High Performance)... finally through switchable option have put the GPU at Manual and selected Power Saver option.. hope this is the required outcome.. is it?

@sagar / everyone else,

Any idea what the difference is between the 4 FHD vaio models are?

Sony VAIO C Series VPCCB35FN vs Sony VAIO C Series VPCCB15FG vs Sony VAIO C Series VPCCB38FN vs Sony VAIO C Series VPCCB17FG: Compare Computers: Flipkart.com

There are 2 models for 54k , and 2 for 69k, the only difference being processor speed / Bluetooth version.

I cannot seem to understand why there would be two models priced the same!

-the processors are different in each of them.
-cb38fn has 640gb hdd, 6gb ram
-the cb17 has 640 gb hdd, 4 gb ram
.the one that i reviewed is the cb15fg wit an i5 2410 processor, which frankly is powerful enough for me

the differences are too minor to warrant the huge price difference

I was actually asking on the difference between the Core i5-2410/2430 , and the Core i7-2620/2640 .

Also , the models seemed to feature Bluetooth 3.0 vs 4.0 .

I checked with Sony, and the lower models ( i5-2410 / i7-2620 ) have been discontinued.

I'm torn between the Vaio and the XPS 15z!

Do you happen to know whether it is possible to replace the hdd that sony provides by a SSD ?

I've ordered a vaio CB series and i'm thinking of uprading it so... but still not sure that it is possible ^^; !
