Activision has announced a new game based on The Walking Dead. Not to be confused with Telltale’s episodic The Walking Dead adventure game, Activision’s version is a first-person action game based on AMC’s The Walking Dead TV show.Developed by Terminal Reality, The Walking Dead will revolve around Daryl Dixon and his brother Merle on a “haunting, unforgiving quest to make their way to the supposed safety of Atlanta.” Players will control Daryl as they attempt to avoid detection from zombies that hunt using sight, sound and smell and will choose between fighting them or using stealth to avoid detection. According to Activision, “No place is truly safe for Daryl as he makes his way through the Georgia countryside in this new, post-apocalyptic world.”

The Walking Dead will hit stores in 2013 for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC. Few other details are available, but check out the game’s official site for more info in the future. Until then, keep an eye out for all the latest announcements about The Walking Dead TV showbefore it returns to AMC for season three later this year.

Activision Reveals Walking Dead First-Person Shooter - IGN

Finished with the 2 Seasons, were good. I hope activision keeps up the level. Though playing like either Rick or Shane would be nice.

Where have you heard that sound at 0:24 seconds? Pretty common in movies as well. One of the most copied notes. :P

The preview from VentureBeat is here!

Set for release sometime in 2013, Survival Instinct (for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC) is a first-person survival game that serves as a prequel to season one of The Walking Dead TV show on AMC, based on Robert Kirkman’s The Walking Dead comic books. Actors Michael Rooker (Merle) and Norman Reedus (Daryl) reprise their onscreen roles in a tale that follows the two brothers during the early days of the zombie outbreak in the state of Georgia. They travel across different towns and cities to scavenge for supplies while meeting other survivors along the way.

Terminal Reality is working with the AMC screenwriters to make sure that Survival Instinct “feels more like a story arc and less like an individual episode,” according to Gamble. For those who follow the show, this can have some very interesting implications when it comes to Daryl, who’s the only character you play. Fans know that the hotheaded Daryl from season one is vastly different from the cooler second-in-command Daryl we see in season three. Without offering anything too specific, Gamble said Terminal Reality is planting the “seeds” of that dramatic change with this prequel.
However, I didn’t find any hint of that during the hands-off 15 minute demo, which takes place about halfway through Survival Instinct. Daryl and Merle were looting supplies from a small town filled with walkers, and most of their dialogue consisted of ordering each other around or commenting on things they found.

Perhaps the most dangerous members of the undead are the ones off the screen. Lurking in alleyways or behind doors, these walkers take advantage of your blind spots by launching surprise attacks. “The idea is to never give the player a chance to get really safe and comfortable where they’re at,” said Gamble.
Daryl’s characteristic weapon — his crossbow — was conspicuously absent from the demo. Gamble laughed when I asked him about it, saying they have something special in store for Daryl’s “Excalibur moment” later in the story.

As Daryl and Merle drive through Georgia, they come across different survivors (new characters who aren’t on the show), and you can choose to add them to your group — more than a dozen possible candidates with their own stories, strengths, and weaknesses. But it’s impossible to recruit them all at the same time since you’re limited by the number of seats in your current vehicle. You can also dismiss them to make more room.

The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct is an ambitious shooter that?s faithful to the show (preview) | VentureBeat

After having completed the series this far, this looks like a mediocre attempt from Terminal Reality. These guys need to really up the ante and focus on delivering a solid survival horror FPS.

Release date announced and yes this one is crowding the March release too!

AMC has revealed that The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct will be released on March 26th in North America and March 29th in Europe. Previously only confirmed for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC, AMC also revealed in a blog post on its official site that Survival Instinct will be headed to Wii U as well.

Unlike Telltale’s episodic The Walking Dead: The Game (which was set in the world of The Walking Dead comics), Survival Instinct is a prequel to the AMC TV show and follows the story of brothers Daryl and Merle Dixon. Norman Reedus and Michael Rooker, who play the characters on the show, will reprise their roles in Survival Instinct.

A cash grab this one is, disappointed you shall be.

Avoid buying ACTIVISION's junk.

I am thinking as much. But if Terminal Reality does manage to pull off a good title, I would be happy. The game has Daryl - the sole reason that has got me excited in the title! He was the star of the amc show!

Activision may be milking the consumers with the CoD franchise but that wouldn't deter me from playing a title that these folks are publishing.

EDIT: The cover!

My only hope is Daryl in the game. And his trademark crossbow. :(

Or this could go into the garbage just like Aliens: Colonial Marines did.

I'm still excited for it, always up for more TWD. But the franchise is growing way beyond its original scope, the comics were great, but have watered down recently. The TV show started off great, but went off tangentially later on and is still enjoyable to watch, but not a must watch. The Telltale game was again amazing, and now this. There is also another Telltale game coming. Too many branching and alternate storylines, Kirkman has created a goldmine.

Some consolation. Couple of users have posted their reviews over at GameFAQs.

First off, just to ease your worries, this game is GOOD. I was actually one of the people that thought this game going to be crap due to lack of information. After playing for 4 hours, I was hooked. I did not complete the game yet just to inform you.
The graphics aren't that bad as many people say. They fit this genre/gameplay. The atmosphere is fantastic. With my trusted flashlight, I ventured through all sort of locations such as a police station, hospital, grocery store, park, etc. I believe the locations are fixed on day/night cycle. Walking through the park level was at night while visiting the a town was in the day.

The gameplay is very similar to dishonored. Combat is more melee focused. A melee weapon has light/heavy attack functions and walkers can easily be killed from a stealth kill. Walkers can only be killed with 4 light or 2 heavy swings to the head. You also can shove walkers off with the RB button just in case you need some breathing room. Now if you happen to get caught within a walker's grasp, you will go into a quicktime event where you need to aim at the walker's head and stab. It's not easy at this point since the camera is shaking, your view is distorted, and your health gradually drops a bit every passing moment. I found it frustrating when I had like numerous walkers on me so I had to do that quicktime event one after another.

Using a firearm is only means for last resort because ammo is scarce and attracts more walkers to your position. So even if you decide to kill off every single walker in a level, walkers will eventually respawn back. Sometimes it's best to avoid fighting so you need to be smart against walkers. There are distraction items to be used against walkers. For example, throwing a glass bottle at desired direction or activating a car alarm to sway off walkers.

The main goal in levels are scavenging for fuel, food, ammo. and weapons like a rabid dog. Sometimes you will encounter survivors that need help as well. In return for completing their quests, they either will aid you by joining your group or give supplies. Unfortunately, you cannot bring everyone to your group because of limited car space. Sometimes you will change vehicles that can hold 2 while others only hold 1. Not to worry, the survivors don't have much personality after joining up. Between levels, there are some planning to do like picking one of three routes to go. One route uses low fuel but high chance to get more supplies and vice versa. Entering a level, you can choose what equipment to bring, command your survivor to find supplies, store what supplies at the car.

The sound is good. Spooky music plays when something is about happen. I actually jumped at times because I never expected what was going to happen. The voice acting is good. Sometimes when you stealth kill a walker, your character will make witty remarks, "Suck it", "Di*khead". That was funny.

In conclusion, I believe this is a good purchase for $40 at amazon. This game has replay value unlike the TT version. Think of this game as an improved Land of the dead on XBOX.

There's another comment down there in the GameFAQs thread.

I just beat the game.

It was better than I expected (better than Aliens Colonial Marines), but still it is not a game I recommend. Ask yourself, if it didn't have "The Walking Dead" title to it, would it still be a good game?

The answer is 'No'. It's basic and generic as can be. It's clear Activision / Terminal Reality made this game without much depth; and only to cash in on the TV series, and rushed this out to coincide with it.

Daryl's voice acting was average, but Merle's VA is pretty good and convincing. The secondary survivor characters are not bad, either. But the story is non-existent, and that's the main problem. All the game really is, is finding supplies, and fuel. Go from this town, to that town.

Even though there are multiple towns/paths you can take, it's all the same. I don't care about replaying it because there really isn't much to offer here, and so I'd prefer TT's TWD point-and-click game to this one.

There was this recent video on YT, wherein they take us behind the scenes and Daryl-Merle comment on their characters and the VA. Merle tell us how Daryl is pronounced and he sounded like a d**k! :|

The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct PC Version Cancelled

Well, we saw that coming. The latest press releases of The Walking Dead: Survival Instict did not include the PC platform and naturally, we began wondering whether Activision has secretly cancelled the PC version of it. And here we are today with a confirmation from Activision’s Greek distributor. According to I.G.E, The Walking Dead: Survival Instict PC is cancelled.

As the I.G.E. Group suggested:

“Activision has announce that the PC version of The Walking Dead: Survival Instict is being cancelled. However, the game will be coming to PS3, XBOX 360 and WII U.”

We don’t know whether we should be happy with this news or not. The Walking Dead: Survival Instict looked mediocre and nowhere as good as we’d hoped to. Therefore, the cancellation of the PC version does not sadden us. It’s strange though that the PC version, a version that was initially announced for release, has been cancelled all of a sudden.

The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct is said to be a do-whatever-you-need-to-survive first-person action game that brings the deep, character-driven world of AMC’s Emmy Award-winning TV series onto console gaming systems. The game follows the mysterious, crossbow-wielding survivor Daryl Dixon, brought to life by TV series star Norman Reedus, alongside his overbearing brother Merle, voiced by Michael Rooker, on a haunting, unforgiving journey across the Georgia countryside. Players will need to tread carefully on this desperate quest, scrounging for food, water, and ammunition to survive against nightmares both living and undead.

EDIT: False alarm. It's the retail release which is cancelled. Digital release is still up on Steam.
