The Internet is a place of wild speculation, but at TrustedReviews we try to steer as clear away from it as possible. We’ll make an exception in this case, however, because the latest news on the Xbox 2 has spread like wildfire.
Just days after we reported Microsoft will reveal all on MTV on 12 May, two major details have emerged. The first is quite possibly the biggest news and that is the name. Not content with a simple “2†suffix, it now looks a nailed on certainty that the next gen console will be called the Xbox 360. This name had been mooted earlier along with the Xbox Next, but I for one didn’t think the Redmond based giant would be so bold as to abandon convention.
Still, this is nothing in comparison with the next shocking piece of news which is that Microsoft will likely ditch the machine's famous black and green styling in favour of white! Furthermore, the picture below is said to be the first genuine shot of it. As always, be advised to take it with a pinch of salt until the official unveiling. (It does amused me to think I suggested, half heatedly, that the console should be called the YBox and it is now being nicknamed the WhiteBox.)
How do we interpret all this news? With caution, naturally. From a personal point of view, I have to say I’m not a fan of the colour choice of the “WhiteBoxâ€. It gives almost unlimited ammunition to Apple and destroys its own image in favour of copying a major industry rival. Yet, word is it is true.
The name, likewise, appears meaningless (we’ll probably find out differently in time), but as any daytime TV guidence counsellor will tell you: it is what's on the inside that counts. On this count, the provisional leaked specs look good and, if it lives up to them, everyone (excluding Sony and Nintendo) will still be very happy indeed.
