thinking of switching to airtel 2mbit with 20gb limit @ 2222.

As the title says, I'm kinda considering switching to this plan from my current 512k unlimited at 1499... the reason being Airtel in Chennai is lagging behind and aren't offering the 1mbit unlimited at 2222.

Now before changing, I wanted to check if any of you would have an idea if I'd cross the limit every month with my typical usage.

I'm not a very heavy downloader. I usually download about 2 4.5gig HD movies a month. Add another 2-3 gigs of miscellaneous stuff. That's about 12 gigs on an average. However, I do watch A LOT of videos on youtube and play A LOT of quake 3 and dota. I have no clue how much these would add to usage as I've been on unlimited plans for years now.

Any info would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

but that's the thing.. i don't download all the time. big files are rare in fact. so i don't see how i'll use 20gb so soon. also my pings have been good for the games i play.

Ashwath, if you hardly download your usage will be well under 20GB even if you game heavily. Upgrade to this plan and track the size of every major download so you can reconcile your data with the ISP's data to get an idea about regular usage.

If you hardly download large files, you usage will be well under the 20GB limit.
But if you hardly download large files, do you really need the extra bandwidth?

^yea i'm kinda impatient when it comes to browsing or if i suddenly want to download a file i need so i'd rather have the speed at my disposal.

@rio, any idea if lots of youtube watching would add to it?

even heavy flash sites will consume a lotta data out of ur quota....

ofcource! Youtube consumes around 3.6MB/1 min clip.

Still not 20GB per month type consumption ;)

Ashwath, for the first week don't download any large videos or files... just go about regular work and gaming to see how much your consumption is. Once you have a fair idea about general consumption, you can download whatever it is you want knowing you won't hit your monthly download limit.

Higher bandwidth translates to doing more in less time for some people, not downloading more :P

Also take into consideration the fact that this limit includes the uploaded data too.

I always consider data limit plans to be a bad idea. These ISP's always find some ways to overcharge you on such plans. Even time limited plans are fine as you can have accurate control over your usage. With data limited plans you cannot have perfect control.

Anyway, If you do not download a lot of stuff, why even change to a 2mbps connection, for your sort of needs, even your 512k connection is more than enough.

^that's the thing. 512 is NOT enough. i might have to carry over video editing work to my house at times and that requires me to download large files (300 mb to a gig) really quickly. on a 512k connect i would be wasting 5 hours just on downloading. like i said, i don't download much but i do need the bandwidth. just because we've all gotten used to slow speeds here in India doesn't mean that they're enough :P

however, are you sure that airtel takes upload data too? i thought it was download only unlike BSNL. if upload is also being counted, i won't consider it.

I'd say never take anything if you have unilimted. You simply cant adjust. I do up down of upto 24-25GB on my 2256kbps unlimited connection.

Airtel is definitely overall data transfer, upload and download. If you plan to work from home often be prepared to pay for overages :D

They charge on a pro rata basis anyway na, so switch over to the 2 mbps plan for a week check out ur usage and if its fine keep it otherwise switch back to the 512k plan
