Graphic Cards This is how i repaired my 8600GT..........

i am having 8600gt card in the home pc.....the pc used to run fine(windows XP) with default applications such as office, browsing, movie etc.......... but when ever i tried to play any game, the game(e.g. NFSMW) used to run very good for 1 min but then it used start framing....... and slowly the game freezed...........

on inspecting i found that the fan in the cpu wasn't running at all.......... when i tried to spin with my own hands i found that the fan was having lot of friction....... i inquired with the gaphics card supplier as it was in warranty period and found that there was no warranty for fan......... i was shocked to hear this as the problem was a very small for which the supplier was not even taking it for repair or maintenance.........:mad:

then i searched on internet and found that because of low quality psu's the fans get damaged in the graphics card........... and all this time i was thinking it was because of dust+moisture accumulating under the fan........:S

anyways tried cleaning it with the benzene solution but that decreased friction marginally.......... then i tried to find a spare fan of same size in the market........ after a lot of difficulty i found a same dimension fan but with different number of fins.......:clap:

it was an old amd processor heat sink cooling fan.......... which i then removed from it(cutted the frame using small hacksaw carefully)...........and sticked to the graphics card using fevikwik:D................ it required some tinkering with the wires and ports(because graphics card fan had 2 wires and amd cpu fan had 3).........

after doing that succesfully i plugged the grpahics card to computer and switched it on.......... and everything was running fine......... the only difference being the gpu temperature at 52 degrees Celsius(used HWmonitor), while earlier it used to be 42 degrees.....while gaming it shoots up to 59degrees celsius.......... but thats ok as the pc is up and running again...........hope it will run another 1 year so...........

it was lot of effort just replacing a fan............. by the way the plus point was that the whole process costed only 50 bucks........:eek:hyeah:
 
Super , its feel good to DIY ,even if you had struggle and sweat a lot . Its not the amount saved but the satisfaction of DIY :D
 
Similar thing happened to my 8800GT, the fan stopped rotating . I replaced with a Glacialtech 120mm which was lying unused. Resulted in a 10-15 degree decrease in temps . :)

Once, on a 6600gt I was using, the fan broke and literally fell down off the heat sink. What I did: used my old fan of the sempron 2600 and taped it to the heatsink of the 6600. Had no problem after that.
 
wAAh well done :D ... something like that happened to my old 8600gt ... i tied an amd cpu cooler to the card using some strings .. n also applied some thermal paste ... it really did the job well
 
Hey which 8600gt r u using . Once the fan of my xfx7600gt died but i got a new card from Rashi , since those brilliant people couldnt even fix a fan .
 
no warranty on fan ? which brand was it ? :lol: fan is part of card , there is no reason they can deny to repair / replace it when card is not working properly .

no warranty on fan ? which brand was it ? fan is part of card , there is no reason they can deny to repair / replace it when card is not working properly .

it was palit brand 8600GT 512mb.......... and i dont know why they denied the warranty on the fan........:huh:

and plus had to roam a lot in the repair shops asking for the same dimension fan........i could find only large cooling fans which are fitted in the cabinet........... then in one of the repair shops i saw one cpu cooler with heat-sink and fan attached lying on the table........... the fan was of same diameter........ but on asking the cooler they said u wont be able to fit the fan and they didn't give as it was to be put back on some motherboard...............

whenever i said the fan required was for graphics card the repair shops refused to even discuss further stating that nothing cant be done or you wont get a same fan anywhere........

then at last in one of the shops i found one guy who seemed to know well about the computers....... he immediately gave me an old amd cpu heat sink with fan on it and even told me which two wires to connect on the graphics card power port...........

i followed the instructions and did some tinkering and thats it.......... my card started working......:clap:........ although the temps were 5-6 degrees higher.......
 
^ It's not that complicated actually. The card on my U.S. bought EVGA 7900GS died after 3 years of faithful service. So, got an 80mm fan and feviquick'd it on top of the fan on card. Temps stay around 50-55 degrees. Anyways, it is used with my HTPC so the GPU is never really stressed out.
