I have finalized my new PC, the configuration is given below with approximate current price:

Q6600-(8MB L2 cache 2.4Ghz 1066MHz) 11100
BioStar TP35D2-A7 Intel® P35 chipset 1333 FSB 4850
2 GB /800 Mhz DDR2 RAM 2500
320 GB hardisk 3600
Liteon 20x DVD writer 1500
POV 8600GT 256MB DDR3 5900
Viewsonic VX1932WM LCD Screen 10500
Creative SBS 560 5.1 speakers 2600
Microsoft wired mouse & keyboard 800

Now I have the following queries about the above configuration:

1: Please suggest a decent and inexpensive cabinet and SMPS for the above system. I do not want to spend too much on it.

2:Is Q6600-(8MB L2 cache 2.4Ghz 1066MHz) quad processor worth the 4k premium over E6550-(4MB L2 cache 2.33Ghz 1333MHz) core 2 duo processor which is around 7k? Which one of these should I go for? Just want to be sure about this!!

3: About the POV 8600GT, it is available in 3 variants 256MB DDR3, 512MB DDR2 and 1GB DDR2 with the prices 5900, 5500 and 6000 respectively. Other details of these cards is mentioned here
:: Point of View :: Gaming Hardware :: DIVISIONS - GRAPHICS - GeForce 8 Series - GeForce 8600 GT
Which one of the three should I go for?

4:Also give your suggestions on anything else you find not appropriate in the above config.

Worth it..

Which one of the three should I go for?

get the 256MB DDDR3 version

BioStar TP35D2-A7 Intel® P35 chipset 1333 FSB 4850

I recommend the ABIT IP-35 IP35-E ....which is about 1k more over the Biostar since it has a 3-phase power management (Biostar has 2-phase)

:Also give your suggestions on anything else you find not appropriate in the above config.

Make sure u have a well ventilated cabby (use two 120mm fans)

Get a good PSU (Cooler Master 600W)

Could you please suggest anything cheaper than Coolermaster, would powersafe 500W be enough for the above config?

For cabinet is Zebronics Bijli fine? Is it available without the cheap zebronics SMPS?

Also, I just saw that Intel is launching some new faster Penryn Quad core processors at the same price as the current ones next month. So should I wait a month?

Bijli is fine. Go for it. If you can get buy cooler Master 500W Extreme Power. it will cost something like 2.5K Dude, i tell you not to compromise on SMPS. a bad SMPS will create troubles for you.
When you are buying a quadcore why go for a cheap PSU. It's better to go for a cheaper Core 2Duo like E6750 and put the savings in a better PSU like Corsair VX450W.

Penryns will be expensive. Q6600 is the only quad from Intel for masses for some time now. With Phenom's disappointing show, Penryn will have a field day in high-end section and will be priced above 30K.

This is what i wud do !!! im not a super PRO but this is my thought !

This is the TOTAL amount of ur config = 43350 + 3200(cool master PSU) + 1500 (standard cabinet) which goes up too ~48,050

so using some A/C here !!! ;)

48050 (- indicates MINUS)
-7000 for E6550
-2500 for RAM
-6000 for ip 35 E
-14500 for 8800GT any brand !
-9500 for 19" screen
-3600 for Hard disk
-800 for KB/MOUSE
-1500 for DVD writer
-3200 for PSU 550W
-1500 for cabbie
----------------------------
Total = -2050

so by putting 2K extra u are

gaining : Multiplying ur GPU by almost 3 - 4 times performance wise so around 300% plus gain ! & 20% in mobo !
loosing : ur speakers that u can buy in anytime if u want + reducing processor speed not by much i suppose!

*The above config is what i am planning to take in a weeks time. minus the Monitor cause im gettin that 4 free :P

i gave u my opinion.... and hey REFER TO THE PRO'S !

I won't recommend the Powersafe. My dl rig's year old Powersafe just blew a few minutes back . No power outtage or anything! Will have to check if the other components are ok or not soon as I get another PSU.

Btw, I agree with Deep about the graphix. An 8600 doesn't make any sense with a quad. Also, CM or Antec is my preferred brand in PSUs.

Powersafe 500w is quite good or you can opt for antec one as suggested by naga. i too prefer both these brands. both are best of the quality and in budget. i myself use 400w powersafe smps.

the main question is for what purpose are u gona use this PC if its just gaming then get a dual core other wise its not worth it

True

The Seventeam 450W i got is a PSU u might consider....its about 1k cheaper than the coolermaster....dont go for powersafe and stuff...when u putting so much money on other components dont save on the PSU

E6760

Biostar TP35D2-A7

HDD and RAM's fine

instead of gettin a basic 5.1, you can get a good 2.1 setup (don't know any model though :S )

and for the G-card, i suggest you get the 256 MB DDR3, 8600GT

cabinet, zebby bijli should do

as everyone else mentioned, having a kickass rig comin' up, never compromise on your power supply :)

CM 500W should be a good choice i guess....

Please tell what you'll be using it for... And the quadcore is worth every penny you spend on it if you'll be USING it for something that can actually come close to straining it.. I've seen people in my hostel buy a quadcore and then do nothing but watch movies on it which is pretty darn ridiculous to me

Short version..
Games - Dual Core + 8800GT
Office ONLY not much gaming - Dual Core + 8600GT(more then enough)
Something that strains your CPU(and i'm not talking abt movies :bleh: ) - Quadcore + whatever fits best in your budget..

And please don't skimp on the PSU... :hap2:

All the best... :hap2:

Thank you everyone for replying. I am not going for 8800GT as I am just a casual gamer. Also I think a quad core processor will fit into my needs. The only thing I am not sure about is whether to wait for 2 months for the new 45nm quad core processors.

The Q9450 looks great at this price.
