Tukaram Omble, stationed at beat chowki No.1 at Prarthana Samaj, was summoned to Girgaum Chowpatty on the night of November 26 as word spread that CST had been attacked and the terrorists had fled. Barricades were put up on the road near Girgaum Chowpatty with about 20 policemen, including Omble, manning it.

Around 12.15 am, they got a wireless message that the terrorists had hijacked a Skoda car and were moving towards Marine Drive. The policemen took up position. A few officers, including PSI Bhaskar Kadam, PSI Sanjay Govilkar and API Hemant Bavdhankar went across the road, while Omble remained behind the barricades.

At 12.30 pm, the Skoda approached at high speed, but stopped 50 feet from the barricades. Suddenly, the beam lights went on, and the car swerved towards the barricades. Just before hitting them, it turned right to jump the divider, but got stuck.

Omble was the first to rush out from behind the barricades. Qasab came, out pretending to surrender, with his gun caught between his legs, and lay prostrate on the ground.

But as Omble neared him, Qasab fired. Five bullets entered Omble’s body, but he managed to pounce on Qasab and held him, completely immobilising him for a while. It was enough time for others to overpower Qasab.

In the meantime, Bavdhankar and others lunged towards the driver of the Skoda (later identified as Ismail Khan). He fired, and the police retaliated. Ismail was killed.

“It was all over in a few seconds. Omble with his bare hands had managed to do what has rarely been achieved in the world. He caught a fidayeen alive,†says Bavdhankar.

Even after Kasab has sung like a canary, Pakistan still denies any links with 26/11. If even Kasab was dead Pakistan would have washed their hands of the whole thing. Its because Kasab was caught alive that the whole world has come to know Pakistan's involvement. And credit for his capture does to Late Shri Tukaram Omble. He deserves nothing less than the Bharat Ratna!

Not sure to what extent this is true. His word against theirs, but still good evidence if not clinching. Along with the intercepts which have a direct link.

His real value as lone survivor is more for us in figuring out how they managed to get into the country, were trained and how they were helped etc.

Where else do you think he could have come from? His family has been traced in his village. Geo Tv caught his father on hidden camera. Pakistan has banned all access to his village now. Why do you think they did this? What more proof do you need?

Precisely my point. The details of the plot would never had been uncovered if all terrorists were killed.

Man's a hero

Couldn't agree more!

The question is how does one prove a person's nationality ?

Normally a country would state x is from their country, via records etc but here we have a country denying it. You can show supporting evidence but thats as far as it goes. And that assertion can easily be falsified ie it gives the Paks plausible deniability, all by design.

Media reports might be good enough for you & me but can media reports overrule what that country's *current* leaders say ?

Not that it matters one bit to us, but we do have to show the world the same, Paks going to fight very hard to block making that point, they have this new term 'non state actor' :)

i think we have made the case already to the countries that matter but the results as yet are not very forthcoming, just getting an outfit banned isn't enough, a HELL of a lot more lobbying to do

Our goverment promises cash rewards everytime but does the money actually go into the wife/father's bank account quickly or do they have to run from one babu to another for it.
