I am running Thunderbird(the latest version) on my x220 to access my office emails at home. It runs extremely slow and takes ages to load emails/go through the email ids stored in the contacts synced with thunderbird. Incidentally thunderbird is what i run in my office dell vostro laptop. It runs slow there as well but not as slow as it does on my x220.
The following are the specs of my thinkpad x220:-
  1. core i7 2620m @ 3.4 ghz
  2. 16 gb ddr3 1333mhz (8gb x2) gskill ram
  3. mydigital msata ssd 64 gb os drive
  4. Windows 7 64 pro (running on my office dell vostro as well)

Kindly suggest some steps to get rid of this issue.

How many emails and email accounts do you have? How often do you have Thunderbird checking for new mail? How much RAM does Thunderbird consume?
Somethings that may help:
1) archive your old mails
2)disable add-ons which you don't need
3)start in safe mode with add-ons disabled and see if that helps
4)try compacting the database.

To answer your questions:-
- thunderbird consumes 67,000K to 72,000K of RAM
- Old mails are archived (Office IT dept did it)
- There are no Ad ons
- My office email is the only mail id account configured for use with Thunderbird
- Thunderbird checks for new mail every 10 minutes I believe
- Starting in safe mode doesn't let me communicate with office mail server properly
- Please elaborate compacting the database
