For people who say that what is a use of an expensive watch? Well the definition of expensive will change. This is one of the watches that everyone will love to look cool in their individual way-the Tissot T-touch.
The T-touch edition is here in India for 4 years and sales are doing good for a luxury item ever since. Keeping aside the fact that this watch costs Rs. 27,400/-, there are many things that one can use.
The Tissot funda:
I remember seeing this watch in t3 edition and getting a top 10 recommended watch list five years ago and that was when I fell in love with it. This is the first edition of the T-touch although there isn’t difference in the options. These watches are hand made beauties all the way from Swiss-yes each of them! Before I talk about the watch, let’s talk about the nest
[BREAK=Packaging-hold me tight]
Tissot packages might look pretty standard, but they packed couple of books in it. When we buy watches like titan, the packaging looks good and come pretty much with a booklet. However, when we see watches, Swiss army knives and cheese from the Swiss, it’s a different ball game. As I turn the box towards the sides, you will see four grooved cartons and the last one is a pullout. This is only place where you find something else other then a watch.
After the package is open, you get the Tissot booklet, Tissot history book (and a pretty detailed one) and a catalogue of the previous models of Tissot with the official Olympic booklet since Tissot is official timekeeper for certain games.
I do not want to see the novel, but I did. Read couple of pages but seen all the pictures. Too much detail since 1853-I hated history so that goes away. On the Tissot catalogue, I have seen many watches, from the ordinary ones to the uber expensive with platinum and diamonds and alarm watches which vibrate. Tissot is very well known for innovation and this is where I try to say with lots of pictures and words-It’s literally more then a watch.
The watch is nestled with a dedicated and rather soft pillow. I am using this for two years and been in highs and lows of this watch. Only thing which worries me about a product when it’s imported from the foreign countries is how the Indians transport the product. The shops which I have seen keep 2 of them per model and they order if the customer insists for a “damned fresh†piece. Where ever you go, this model costs the same, so be careful if you get this watch in a lower price. Coming to the transportation part, there are extremely few places that sell, store these watches correctly and know how to repair them.
My brother bought this watch with a silver dial from time avenue at Bandra west a year before I did-and got spoilt within 4 weeks-the dial was not synchronized. After sending it to tissot’s service centre at Delhi, my brother had to wait for 2 months to get it fixed, the result-after a week, it dies off. This time the owner taken over the issue and concluded that my brother magically screwed up the watch by putting something inside. They refused to give any further service and my brother’s heart just crashed, but the owner gave a chance and got it repaired. Recently it died because it needed a battery change. They refused to do so. It was hilarious, he had to put it up on CNN-IBN forums where someone from Tissot Delhi taken over the issue. At the end of the day, it was a synchronization issue where they could have taken care of within the watch by doing couple of setting changes on the watch. Big joke-sellers and distributors didn’t know about this at all-The Delhi guy sent it to Switzerland to get it “fixedâ€.
I wanted to check out more then one place and I was shocked about seeing the conditions of the watches. The ones on Malls had scratches on them and bad salesmen, the pieces at jewelry store had a dent on the metal links but said they will just change it with other watch and this is where I said no to hell with it. These guys don’t know how to take care of the issue and I really wanted to buy this watch through a store where they know what they were selling. So I taken a chance and went to watches of Switzerland, Bandra which was recommended by someone I used to be with. The watch was sparkling and shiny. No scratches and dents. The salesmen completely knew what I was checking out for and given me sweet time to examine and no cheesy sales pitch. He said that there is a 2 years warranty. I and my mom were looking at each other. Other shops didn’t know it was for 2 years and it’s mentioned in the booklet. I asked him about the mis-alignment issue about my brother’s watch and he showed how to re-align it. Whoa they did know what they were selling. I gave cash and I got it. He gave me pointers like don’t use solutions and use a lint free cloth, clean the edges of the links, stuff like that.
[BREAK=Features and golden rules: The Sorcerer speaks...]
Before I continue with the watch, here are the features:
Touch type interface with Sapphire crystal
6 interface-meteo (barometer), altimeter, chrono, compass, alarm and thermo
Stainless steel (also avail in titanium for Rs. 31,700)
Analog and digital display
Rotating bezel
Semi-perpetual date
Luminescent hands
Dimensions:
42 mm in diameter, 150 Gms
Warranty:
2 years (except in U.S.) covered from any Tissot authorized showrooms.
Golden rule of Tissot T-touch: RTFM
First Impressions and functions:
When I wore this for the first time, I felt it was heavy for a watch. The previous Timex Watches I wore isn’t heavy, but this weight is a lot. Some parts inside is mechanical and does have a different kind of chip to make the necessary calculations. This isn’t as basic as the Timex watch, even in the compass category. In order to activate the t touch function, you have to press the t button in between. Inorder to change the digital from time to date, just tap in the middle of the glass after pressing t and after 10 minutes, settings are confirmed and permanent until changed. It displays 24 hours or out am/pm.
Starting from Meteo (barometer):
Meteo:
Barometer function- It helps to indicate meteorological trend.
Assume in meteo mode that 12 indicate 0. From the left -6, -5, -4, -3, -2, -1 indicating decrease in atmospheric pressure and from the right 1,2,3,4,5,6 indicating increase in atmospheric pressure.
Now in the manual they said weather conditions are linked to meteorological trends. So I turned on the air conditioner and kept it at 20 degrees Celsius for an hour with this watch (not on my hand-just to eliminate any possible influence) to see if the watch’s meteo gets confused, and it does not. When I read about this watch on UK’s t3 magazine some years ago, they said that this watch does make geographical and mathematical calculations for a specific function. In the digital display, it displays hectopascal. The Measuring range is from 300 hPa to1100 hPa and accuracy is ± 3 hPa and resolution is 1 hPa. I am not a science student so it wouldn’t be right for me to try to explain in a mock up manner.
[FONT="]Next-it’s the altimeter
[/FONT] Indication of altitude in relation to sea level:
This altimeter calculates according to the atmospheric pressure. Now according to the manual, it also says that aircraft cabin pressure does not play any role with the actual internal calculations. Another good thing about the altimeter is that it updates itself every 10 seconds. The measuring range is – 400 m to +9000 m whereas the resolution is 1 metre.
The chrono:
The chrono is a standard lap type chrono, nothing to explain.
Compass (UPDATED)
Compass. This is not those watered compass. According to the manual it calculates the geographical north by using magnetic declination. Now one can change the calculation of the magnetic declination 30 to the left and right. The long point is north while the short is indicating south. Now whenever it shows north towards 12 o’ clock, in geographical sense, it does after considering the 15 degrees tilt. The accuracy is ± 8º.
Inorder to prove that this compass is accurate, I compared with an engineering compass. There seems to be no distance lag on both of the comparison and that is clearly seen on the watch.
Alarm
The alarm is also the same as chrono, but it definatly doesn’t sound like a Timex or a Casio. Thankfully it doesn’t ring again like snooze alarm. Alarm sound goes on for 10 secs which is enough to get your attention but might not wake you up to the core.
Thermo:
Thermo did have an essence of Timex’s thermo on certain old models (I don’t know much about the new ones). It needs to be kept out of your hand for 15-30 minutes. Also if you wear it, it doesn’t display your body temperature, it just gets confused and gives a literal wrong (but mathematically right) result. Best part is that you can change it to Fahrenheit.
Measuring range is from -10 degrees Celsius to +60 degrees. And accuracy is ± 1º.
[BREAK=Backplate and conclusions]
Back plate:
No screws. You need some sort of a tool to open this one. Brushed thick stainless steel protection and the shines lasts for an extreme long time, just like the rest of the body. The model number and the serial code is given at the back. Tissot does document their watch carefully so that they can refer to their notes if a watch comes back if it’s a defect. I doubt you might get this in grey market, but you never know. That is an unexplored territory for me in the world of watches. But as usual I would say, be carefully where you buy it from, check every link if you have to.
The watch is amazing. You wear a Tissot; it will catch everyone’s eyes-even if you dress in a shabby manner. This is not your daddy’s citizen or a Casio. It’s more then a watch. It is expensive, but this watch is meant for upper buyer. The ones without the touch cost from 17k to 19k. Don’t doubt the strength since these watches are quiet strong, the weakest one I sensed was in rado which is very overpriced and I feel it is not worth the price of Rs. 1 lakh and above. Some showrooms do bother to keep the classic models made in very old ages. Question remains- where you are buying it from. My recommendation, don’t buy it from malls. They just keep one piece and expect the genuine person to buy the same piece. There is a good chance that it could be with old manufacturing date and if there are scratches on the links, they will either remove it or use some solution- which is never recommended and just walk away with a smirk on the face and piece of your mind. If you want to buy in Mumbai, buy it from watches of Switzerland at linking road where an owner actually sits there and the salesmen are smart buggers who know to detect customers. This watch gets a cozy in packaging, 5 in the built, strength and quality of the watch but 3 when it comes to maintenance and they should have given a lint free cloth with this watch.
Overall, this watch is a classic and gets 4 out of 5. Even though this is expensive, this is one of the cheapest and best in ultra expensive watches.

Golden rule of Tissot T-touch: RTFM
- As in read the FINE manual. Reason I am saying is because the meteo and altimeter needs to be understood how it works rather then showing it off without knowing it.
- Another thing that this is not a toy. This is a sophisticated masterpiece- I saw this watch on 2 movies of Angelina Jolie-the second tomb raider and a cream dial with wrist strap on Mr. and Mrs. Smith when she was on a dessert.
- In Tissot’s case, the showroom’s stamp, code of the watch and date is important since the bad piece is first sent to New Delhi office and if its not a lock down issue (you will know what is that in point number 4), then its off to Switzerland. Sad, but this is not the case only for India, but of any country. Any troubled piece is taken care only by the Swiss manufacturer personally and every worksman is responsible for the working of the watch.
- Keep this watch away from magnet and Electromagnetic objects. To make sure that the piece doesn’t get spoilt by the user’s idiotness, they have put 2 fail safe resets. One of the symptoms is when the hands are misaligned when using compass, which can be corrected by using the instruction on the manual, second is when the piece shuts down and performs a lock down, which can be done only by the office. At rare case (mine for instance), it uses only the reset done by the worksman.
