I am using Bit torrent and MTNL broadband connection. When i am downloading normal file without torrent the speed comes between 100-140 kbps and when i use bit torrent, the speed is just 2-5 kbps.

Pls tell me what could the problem be and how to increase its speed.

I files i am downloading has more than 1000 seeders and more than 2000 peers and so on.

Pls help.

check your NAT settings - you might have to disable UPnP, DHT and Peer Exchange in utorrent. Also make sure that your ports are forwarded. Go to portforward.com for more information on that.

also limit your upload speed to 80% of total bandwidth. the tracker needs that small amount of bandwidth to correctly update your up/down stats.

also make sure that utorrent is in exceptions in windows firewall.

if you are using any other firewall check that it's not blocking it.

+1 to phoenix and naveen,even then its a HUGE difference in download speed that you are getting,make sure that any 3rd party firewall is turned off,also make your torrent client is a trusted application in your user interface

Which ISP?? Make sure you've forwarded your ports correctly and that utorrent shows green sign for port status.

Also do try downloading Openoffice torrents or download from a private torrent website. See if it improves or not..

^^ Mostly depends on your ISP as you had to open your ports to allow incoming connections so that some tracker only allows higher downloading speed if you are seeding it at higher speed.

100-140 kBps download speed :huh: = 1MBps line; man thats a good connection. Wats the charges?

Neways these days with a "major" tracker goin legit, the seeder/leecher nos are exaggerated.

Also make sure ur not wasting ur connections/BW on fake trackers. Get & install peerguardian, this will shield u.

+ 1st thing do check if ur port is forwarded. If its not, try a different port. Some ISPs block certain ports intentionally. For starters try 6881, this is sorta the default torrent port. U can change it through settings page in ur torrent software

Torrent download speed simply doesnt only depend on seeders,it also depends on which tracker u are using.

Private trackers eg: torrentbits,iptorrents etc can give u full speed with just 10-20 seeds.

u will always get poor speed with public trackers even if there are 1000 seeds.

private trackers are open to registration only few weeks in a year..they have strict rules. eg: having a descent transfer ratio,uptime/downtime ratio etc.

To get into private trackers u need an invite from a friend who is already in one.

@Phoenix

You meant enabling uPnP or disabling ?? Because AFAIK enabling the tick for uPnP in utorrent avoids us from doing the port forwarding and also ensures that speed is increased?? From personal experience.

Correct me if i am wrong.

BTW yes about those public trackers, never expect getting full speeds.

@Raks

enabling UPnP in utorrent helps only if your router/modem also supports UPnP.

In my case, I had enabled UPnP in both, and I could not be connectable on any tracker. I disabled UPnP in both I was connectable everywhere, apart from the manual port forward thing.

Now i hv got 34mb lease line in my office which has reacently been upgraded from the earlier 4 mb lease line. But still the same problem of slow torrents.

Pls tell how to enabling UPnP and from which settings?
