Hey guys,

I have a 320 GB internal HDD. All my storage is on my external 500 GB HDD. Am now downloading about 60GB of content and thought of saving it directly to my external drive and gave the path as well accordingly. But when I use my system for downloading overnight, download does not seem to progress. I currently use Win 7 x64. I have disabled all the power save options. Is there anything else to be done? Or any other setting to be changed. Is it compulsory to get an internal drive so that this does not happen? The external drive is a USB powered 2.5-inch WD Passport.

P.S: Downloads to internal drive, work perfectly fine though.

^There shouldn't be a problem downloading to external drives - have done that before without issues.

Could you check if the net connection does not have problems during the night?

Net did have issues earlier, replaced my modem recently. I will check tonight as well. Wanted to know as this is a USB powered drive and not the ones powered from external source.

Downloading to your external drive should never cause the issue as you have mentioned. I have done a lot where i have directly kept my downloads to happen on external drive.

Why dont you try downloading on your local HDD one night and see if issue persists.

One of my external HDD's went kaput because of constant uploads and downloads...Heat might have been an issue.

Probably because when torrenting the HDD is continously spinning either doing an upload (reading) or download (writing). Infact my Hitachi Neso HDD has a steel casing and that too tends to get too hot :O when it was used for torrenting but since the casing was heat conducive i thought it will be a normal phenomenan. :ashamed:

Does drive go bad due to constant uploads and downloads. ?

IIRC there was a thread here long time back which pointed to an article which stated that HDD can go kaput if constantly used for torrenting purpose.
Not sure if this is true or not :S

^^ That was for any HDD (internal and external) :)

True.. it doesn't matter whether it is an external or an internal drive. That is why some people advocate the use of a larger disk cache for uTorrent. Don't know how much it'll help though.
