Toshiba Satellite L300 problem (solved )

Here I have a Toshiba Satellite L300. Celeron Based processor with 2gb of ddr2 667 mhz ram and 150gb Hdd.

Now the problem is, while the laptop is on and running, whenever I plug in the charger adapter, the monitor turns off, I mean it goes blank. I could still hear the computer running, but no display or whatsoever. Again, when the laptop is in turned off state and charger adapter plugged in, the laptop wont turn on, no display at all. Same doesnt happen while running it on battery. The battery gets charged as well.

What could be the problem?
:(
I got my trimester projects to be completed. Please help.

hmppph, After a lot of googling ang boogling, finally I found what the problem was. This is caused by a bad cap. A big one - NEC/TOKIN 0E907 (900uF/2.5V) under the CPU. Somehow removed the bad cap using some sharp tool to pry it off. Cleaned it off. Now all I have to do is get 4 300uF Tantulum capacitors and solder it to the terminals. Wish me luck.

^^ The BAD CAP :(

^^ cleaning it was a bit pain in the stomach without a hot air gun or an Infrared rework station.

Arrghh> finally. I repaired it. Could not do a job with a soldering tool. Had to borrow a heat gun to solder these flat capacitors.

Hope this is helpful to all the Toshiba users out here. (L200 or L300 series)

For people asking about these capacitors.

Got them from 'Chip components' located in Lamington road.

Each 330uf 2.5v smd tantalum capacitor priced for 30 rupees.

All the best.

I have the same exact problem but it may sound weird but just disable the proccy drivers in device manager and it works( temoprary solution).

Even i need to source the capacitors and do the soldering. BTW how did you remove the BGA soldered NEC Prodalizer ?

Its easy to remove the NEC cap, its not BGA soldered, just soldered on 4 parallel tracks.

2 methods to remove it :

1.Using a Hot air gun you can blow some hot air momentarily & simply pull up the capacitor. - Requires a Hot air gun, also how to safely operate it without damaging the board, so best bet to use this method is by taking it to SMD solder professional.

2.Easier & home made method, Remove CPU, heatsinks fan & other components from the board take a sharp & thin flat bed screw driver, insert the screw driver tip below the NEC cap & give a light psuh upwards, dont worry even if the capacitor is damaged its of no use anyways. Be careful that you dont lift of the tracks too, so apply the pressure on screwdriver properly.

Once done you will see the 4 parallel tracks, on which you can solder 4 X 330uf 2.5v SMD capacitors, make sure you use capacitors of total value >900uf but 2.5v so combination depends on you. Take care of polarities of capacitors, google for images which show which polarity go on which track.

Also soldering new SMD caps might be a tough task, but the caps that I used had side connectors so I simply used a soldering gun to solder 4 of them just the nish_pinto has done.

Basic soldering skills are required to do this operation sucessfully.

Thanks for the info #[member='siril_k']. Soldering will be done by a Bangalore TE member who is good at it. Will PM you if any other help needed.

Also can you point me towards a genuine Toshiba charger , mine is a 65W adaper with output rating for 4.7A. Right now using a 3.96A but it went kaput just now. Although a Lenovo charger is working with my laptop but i doubt its any safe.

PS: Can i get the caps if you have any ?

well for getting a toshiba genuine charger, you need to visit a Toshiba Service Centre / Authorized Dealer.

Chargers available on ebay seem to be fake OEMs.

Next time i will. Just figured out that the power cord up to the charger has gone bad and not the charger. Where can i get a universal charger and is it really safe.

A friend of mine had bought a universal charge for his toshiba laptop some 6 months ago. I will report his feedback to you. For now see this- http://www.ebay.in/itm/GIGABYTE-Universal-LAPTOP-Power-Adaptor-Charger-90W-65-/400290796268?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_203&hash=item5d3330d2ec#ht_3344wt_910

And yeah, it is safe till the adapter is of same volt rating.

Just contacted him. He had bought a Cooler master universal charger and its working fine for him. you can also go ahead.

Thanks #[member='JuGGa'], like siril.k mentioned, I used a flat tip screw driver to pry it off. I recently repaired an Acer laptop which had the same problem. But this time I used a rework station which made my work more easy when it came to removing the bad NEC and seating the new smd caps.
