Hi

My friend opened his HDD for data recovery and he accidentally touched the Platter :(

What do you guys say.

Thanks
Ameet

And he didn't stop at that he cleaned it with a tissue paper, and he told me it's looking like a mirror now.LOL,he didn't even ask me before opening the HDD.He just watched some crazy shit youtube videos and started all alone.

Awesome... data recovery by opening HDD??? OMG.... was he planning to put that platter in some other HDD or DVDwriter to recover the data... ??

Jokes apart, if your friend has made it working again (i doubt), data will be still there only if the platters are not damaged by his cleaning the platter with tissue paper... all the best to your friend...

^^ ask your friend to get a new one, even a small fingerprint on the HDD platter with become an issue during read-write operation, and thhat fellow have touched it and also cleaned it with tissue - which might leave unwanted residue.

Better askk him to wash it properly with water and use it for shaving, and get a new one for his system.

Dude you people are real fun.I like all your comments.LOL

^Ya he has a beard, and I'll tell that people on TE are saying to use it for saving.LOL

'nuff said. What was he thinking?

Anyways hes probably lost all chances of getting his data back. Hope the HD didn't have anything important or precious.

May be just me :ashamed: I opened my HDD casing and took out all important data with a spoon. Then I boiled it, at exactly, 95'C and removed all dust. And it just works fine !

err...fingerprint??

I thought that opening the hard disk in a normal house and not in a clean room destroys most of the data since the particulate matter in the air sticks to the platter and creates problems while reading data.

^^ thats right too, i was speaking of some extreme scenario :)

Personal experience : Once i opened up a partial HDD (warranty expired), did nothing just opened and saw the things, next after closing it and connecting it again, the HDD was not detected :P

Technically, I don't think touching the platter should pose a problem. It's a magnetic media and not an optical one. The reason why it's sealed like that is to avoid the electromagnetic interference and also the platter being fragile and its non-tolerance to shocks. So as long as it was not a blow that cracked the platter, you should be no farther away from data recovery as you were before touching the platter. :)

^^ hey mate found this online : Hard Disk Platters

Platter surfaces have a mirror finish. Any contamination can render the contaminated area of the platter unreadable. The surface of the platter is especially succeptible to finger prints with even the slightest touch. That is why careful handling of a hard drive is critical during the recovery process, and all recovery work must be completed in a clean room environment.

Actually, even opening up a harddrive should be enough to screw it. HDDs are assembled in specialized controlled cleanrooms. Even the minutest of dirt/dust particles that could land on a platter can screw things up. OP's friend was busted the second he decided to open his HDD

HDD are vaccum packed. if it's been opened.. you are already in a soup.
I am kinda happy he didnt made the hdd stand up vertically to get the fragmented data in one place first before starting with the 'recovery'.

Ask him to clean it with a thinner, then add equal dead weights in a diametrically opposite fashion.
If still required, use the disc converter module (adapter) and when its weight reaches decent bit, use it as a frisbee.
And maybe mods can add this thread to- 'Encounter With Noobs'.
