TP Link W8968 issues.

The app is called 'inssider'. It can be installed on any android device there is also a windows version.

I'm surprised you have a weak signal already in the living room with the W8968. Should not be a problem crossing one wall. The 5dbi antennas should be vertical to get the best horizontal coverage. So go to the living room and mention what the signal level as indicated by inssider and in your sister's & parents room.

I think you will have to play with positioning to see which gets you the best signal. Just use the router and a power extension cable. nothing else connected to the router. Power it on, let the wifi come up, them move around the house with inssider to check the signal level in dbm. Try moving the router to your living room and see what the signal is like in your bedroom. is the signal in the bedroom stronger than it was in the living room with the router in your bedroom or the same.

I use WiFi analyzer. Also, I dont think the Beetel can be used as a repeater.[DOUBLEPOST=1384073757][/DOUBLEPOST]I would suggest getting a cheap router as a repeater. Ideally, if you can run another wire - use it as a Wired AP.

I will give it a try.

Last evening my PC went bust. Motherboard was fried thanks to something going wrong with the UPS. Both my HDD is gone. Funniest thing is I had used Yadis to backup data from 1 HDD to the other and now both are gone. God knows if the processor & ram survived or not. Will come to know in the next few days.

are you sure the motherboard is bust or is it just the SMPS.

When you said the signal is weak in the living room, was it using the laptop ?

You can install inssider on the laptop too and compare signal levels with android.

@blr_p, @vivek.krishnan - Thanks for suggesting the apps. Switched to channel 7 which was suggested by the app. The reception is much beret in the living room & to some extent survives just enough in sister's room for some light browsing.

Board & SMPS are not the only ones I am afraid. Both hdds are gone & so is the graphic card.

When it sparked it blew an entire chip on the graphic card.

I am just hoping the processor & RAMs survived. I don't want to upgrade till April 2014.

Right, this is more along the lines that i was expecting for range with this router.

So you have a busy spectrum to deal with. Inssider should tell you how busy it is. You need to stay off channels that have networks in the 60-80dbm level. Anything over 90 can be ignored. Thing is this will not remain static, if the other routers have 'clear channel' tech, they will hunt about for better signals. Now if you set your channel as fixed, then the others will avoid you. Course if your neighbours are as intransigent then you both will suffer.

Which UPS was it ?

Rectified voltage to the mobo can do this sort of damage ?

I had a lightning stirke close by once, sent a surge through the earthing, which travelled through the nic and blew out a laptop nic connected via cable. Nothing else was affected.

I think most were channel 1. Have set 7 as fixed. For my sake I sure hope no one decides to use that. Anything beyond Living room is around 90 unfortunately. At the moment this will have to suffice till I sort a few other issues viz., My PC

APC 500 VA.

Lightning has struck me once as well but all it took out was the motherboard.
The problem started a few months back. I have a custom chimney like contraption in my desk as there is no space for the rear exhaust air to leave which caused my PC to heat up. So this contraption fitted with a small 5 inch exhaust pumped the air upwards. This fan blew up once. I fitted a new fan which also blew up a few months later. Then my speakers went up in smoke. All this while I thought it was a power fluctuation.
On Saturday evening when I tried to start my PC it wouldn't start. It had done this before. So I opened up my cabinet tinkered around a bit and tried to start the PC. A huge spark and then everything it was over.
The technician told me the UPS if old can be a cause. The UPS is old and I had noticed that at times when I was using the monitor with my PS3 and I started the Monitor before the UPS had settled down it would cause the monitor to loose the signal. That was not the only thing but I could never really put a finger on it and I am not sure I still can but if the UPS is the culprit then I will have to pay dearly for my aloofness.
