TP Link WDR3600 - wireless range ?

@avi

If u want dual band then wifi range would be low in all cases. It has got nothing to do with the router but the sheer limitation of the 5ghz band.

G on 2.4ghz has the maximum reach and n on 5ghz the least. If u were to Google comparison between some top end routers with 5ghz functionality, you would be surprised how well the tplink 3600 stands in comparison to the double priced alternatives.

Imho, 3600 is ideal for an apartment typically 1200-1500 sqft with an open structure. And please don't be misled by the throughput figures quoted on the box. They're merely sales gimmicks like the MP on cameras. Real world throughput in our brick and rcc enforced homes, is usually 1/3rd and lower at best.

Could you layout your apt plan and such and the number and type of devices along with applications like just browsing, gaming or hd streaming etc...

I want to replace my current router and my budget is 3k-4k. Well cheaper the better. I have no idea whether I should be getting dual band or not tbh. Router will be and should be on for 24/7. There are hardly any power outages, so I would never turn off my router. One laptop and one raspberry pi will be connected to it always. And often my iPhone and iPad Air will be connected. It will be downloading torrents all the time (via connected RPi or directly connecting HDD). I would like it to stream 1080p movies (those 6-8GB prints) to my iPad Air or to my laptop or to both sometimes. The source may be from external HDD connected directly or via Raspberry Pi.

I was suggested to NOT go for N13 (or N14) which cannot do both simultaneously i.e. download and stream. So next good option was WDR3600 from TP Link. But many reviews said range is poor in 2.54Ghz also.

Few questions.

1. What is ur Internet type?
2. What is the area size, number of walls where u want wifi coverage?
3. Flexibility of placing router? Location I mean?
4. How are u gonna stream to ipad? Would u need transcoding or any special media server or simply upnp?
5. What are u running on rpi currently? Just torrenting or using wait for xbmc too?
