The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India ( TRAI ) has has asked mobile operators to implement national number portability within six months.

Till now mobile number portability ( MNP ) is only possible within operator circles, but when a person is moving to different states, he needs to buy a new SIM card. With country-wide MNP, users will be able to retain their numbers while moving to different states also.

Full MNP was expected to be rolled out by Feb 2013, but it didn't happen due to various issues.

TRAI has said in a statement ,"After an examination of various issues, Trai today released the recommendations on full MNP."

"Implementation of full MNP would therefore mean acceptance of a porting request by the recipient operator from a mobile number belonging to any of the licence service area (LSA)s of the country, irrespective of the fact that the LSA from where the subscriber is porting his mobile number and the LSA to which he wants to port his number belong to the same or different MNP zones."

" Trai has recommended that Department of Telecom (DoT) may carry out the necessary changes in the existing MNP service licence to facilitate inter-service area porting or full MNP.
