Trai looks for tech solutions on unsolicited downloads

In an open house discussion in Hyderabad on October 24, Trai sought insights and suggestions on whether such content downloads would need any regulatory intervention. Lately, there have been consumer concerns around spontaneous advertisements on some websites and social media platforms, which download video content automatically, leading consumers to incur data charges without their consent.

Before clicking on the link, I thought it would be something related to some site ads trying to automatically download android apk on phones or sending to Google Play Store. Even this video download should be stopped. Seems like all the news sites are doing this now.

Earlier you could block auto play of plugins but now it seems to be iffy. Especially with faster tech like 4g, an autoplay video would download completely before you could even click pause.

This is not a trai or Indian issue alone, worldwide, sites are doing this sh!t.

What i anyway do with indian news sites, because of their anti-adblock is to load them in a web proxy like zend2. This takes cares of the video as well.
