Transfer files from one PC to another without any external HDD/USB

This may be a noobish request.
I have a Toshiba laptop which i am 100% sure is infected by Virus which damages (not physical ofc) the external HDD/Pen drive/any USB storage device.
The HDD is as it is full of bad sectors and now i need to backup the contents of the HDD to another laptop of mine but i have no interest in doing this using any HDD connected to that as i fear that one also will be damaged.
Both laptops have wifi in it. So is there any way i can transfer files between these two using wifi only ??
How do i setup adhoc wifi connection between these two laptops ??
Toshiba lappy has Vista home premium while other laptop has Windows XP.

I think LAN cable wont work well as i have tried before connecting these two using LAN cable and there is always some issue.

I doubt you can AD-Hoc between XP and Vista. Since both devices have Wi-fi adapters try Connectify. It automatically connects both devices. But the transfer 'over' wi-fi is going to be really really slow.

^^As long as this thing works, i am fine. Transfer time is not an issue and i wont be transferring huge amount of data, just selective things.

@raksrules, mate i have tried transferring data between a xp and a win 7 machine using LAN and it worked for me, why isn't it working for you, that will be much faster then transferring over wifi

You cannot connect between 2 PCs using the normal ethernet cable (unless the LAN has auto-MDIX capability). You need a crossover ethernet cable. Make one yourself or ask the shopkeeper to make a crossover ethernet cable and do the required steps.

Just curious but this laptop has been in TE's spotlight for all the wrong reasons - could you not backup all the data, do a complete format and install the OS from scratch?

What AV have you installed in the laptop anyway? Are you not able to transfer the contents to any portable drive at all due to this particular virus?

^^ You can get a cross lan cable at an electronics store for 25 bucks. First try with the normal lan cable. If you are able to ping the other system and get a response, then the connection is fine. Else try with cross-lan cable. Connect them both, make sure they are in the same network (similar IP's with only the last part different) and use IP messenger. It is a very very light weight Lan messaging/file transfer software. It has worked very well for me when I want to transfer files from one system to the other.

Edit: You need to install and open IP messenger on both systems, and then you will be able to see and communicate with all other systems on the LAN

^ u can connect btw u need to set up the ip config detail 192.168.1.2 for laptop and desktop 192.168.1.3 with default subnet 255.255.255.0 and gateway 192.168.1.1, then share the network between windows xp and 7 for allowing permission control groups and then copy the files to desktop pc ;)

@Gannu

That is exactly what will be happening this weekend. The HDD on this laptop is total junk now and will die anyday, so i want to backup the HDD contents (selective) and then install windows 7 on it for trial purpose. The HDD cannot be RMAed so it will eventually go in dustbin. So want to experiment and play with it before it is laid to rest.

There is another WD 320 GB HDD which i need to get RMA done but these WD people are very unresponsive. No one came to pickup the HDD and they are not even sending me the TO-PAY approval mail so i can sent the HDD via bluedart etc.

This 320 gb one after RMA will be my new HDD in this toshiba laptop.

I think it has Avira or something. I dont know much as i have access to this laptop for only 2-3 days in a month. I am scared to connect any external HDD/ Pendrive for the fear of it getting corrupted. See my other thread about this problem

I suggest not to transfer data while booted into that infected OS in you lap. take out the laptop's HDD, connect it to a desktop which has a fully updated good Antivirus. Run a deep scan as soon as you connect the laptop HDD, and after that take the backup as required.

While booted into that infected OS, it might be impossible to remove certain virus, and even accessing it's share from network can cause infection in other machine.

Windows Xp can only detect crossover cable LAN connections but higher versions of windows like vista and win 7 work with normal straight cable LAN connections.
