Hi there

I recovered a folder of 1.5GB and need to hand it over to somebody. We don't meet at all, so I was planning on using a torrent client to transfer the file.

I basically zipped and password protected the folder, and created a torrent without a tracker. The torrent is seeding from my machine, and I sent the torrent file to my friend.

Is that all that is needed to transmit files, or am I missing something?

If its 1.5Gb, i would also suggest Live Mesh. You could transfer the file to the Live Desktop and he could download it via his Live Desktop at maximum speed.

With the torrent, you both would have to keep the machines on and the torrent client running at the same time. With Live Mesh, you need not keep the machines and the client on simultaneously.

He would hav to keep praying that it starts syncing..Mesh has a mind of its own..And with such a big file..might take ages..

Else try a file upload service..

But torrent should be hassle free..

We both face that problem because i have disabled synching with the Live Desktop, so for us, Mesh waits till the internet is idle or we are not using it.
Whereas, when synching with the Live Desktop is enabled, the syncs start immediately and is much more convinient. I use it to share files with my cousine in the USA, and its smooth. We dont have to be online at the same time.
A much better option than the torrents.

Why dont you install an FTP server client , ask your friend to log in and download , it will be instantaneous + speeds will max out

Thanks for the help - I guess FTP is a good suggestion as my machine is anyway on 24x7. Her machine will not be on all the time, though. With ftp she can probably access it from work (P2P is usually blocked on work comps). Do I need to open up a port on the router for this to work?

I guess a torrent will also be able to max out bandwidth if nothing else is downloading.

And no, DHT is not on, I kept is disabled. I should have left it on while creating the torrent?

Thanks for the help guys, repped those I could :)

At that time we tried with you keeping it ON too..

Anyway..Its not abt the speed at which it transfers, it abt the time it takes to start transfering..

If it works, problem solved..
What you keep opened all the time is the Live Mesh app, Live Desktop is something totally different. It is the 5GB online space you have.
And i have disabled the sync to Live Desktop for our folder, that is why ours is a direct P2P transfer and gives troubles.
For the normal sharing, Mesh syncs the file to your Live Desktop first, then it is copied / synced with the other person's Live Desktop and then synced to their devices.

I dont think so , it uses port 21 which is usually opened . I personally use this :

Quick'n Easy FTP Server Lite | Portable USB Pen Drive Applications portable + small (320kb) . Althugh youll need to set up DynDNS if you have a dynamic IP address . I used this to transfer a 500 mb file to my brother in the states and i got good upload speeds (~50 kBps)
