One of my friends recently mentioned getting fined by the tc for carrying his PC monitor in train compartment. After a bit of googling I read about similar experiences by others but there is no mention regarding this on the Indian Railways website;

http://www.indianrail.gov.in/luggage_Rule.html

http://www.indianrail.gov.in/Rulesratesforcharging_bic.pdf

No specific mention of electronic goods such as tvs/computers in either of those links afaict.

Can someone shed some light on what exactly the rules are?

Did he pay the fees for the cargo before he boarded the train? If he didn't, it would obviously attract a fine.

I once took a whole new system to Nagpur without any fees or informing but also risk free./

Had 2 bags.

Inside mobo box, mobo was already assembled with proccy. The box had the rams in their own pack. Extra fans. Needed cables.

In another empty mobo box, put hdd in sealed packet, hsf, dvdrw and mouse.

Then both the boxes in my one bag & keyboard in another bag with my clothes.

Samsung 20in led in its own box.

So the only suspicious thing was the lcd but no official bothered to ask.

Only cabby and speakers were bought locally.

Just 2 --3 weeks back I transported my 20" monitor from Bangalore to Delhi [on a Rajdhani], no questions asked, Cabinet + UPS and speakers were shipped via GATI.

I once transported my pc via train, and at the source station I went to the parcel office, had the thing weighed and paid a charge of 80 rupees for it. But no one inquired about it throughout the entire journey and never had to produce the receipt.

I took my own PC in tier2 ac and carried it with the help of a porter once i reached chennai. Managed to wiggle out of a situation when the TT asked what's in the computer box- my friend said some B$ hehe.

I've taken around my pc for 4 trips without knowing of this rule and the packages were in fact quite bulky; MX5021, cabby, monitor etc all in their cases, in addition to luggage. The TC's weren't bothered at all. In fact once I kept the luggage with the TC while I was shifting them among compartments having gotten on the wrong one initially.

Lucky but next time be sure to either hide them completely in your luggage or pay legal charges before boarding them.

As long the legal limit is not crossed there is no harm. Also i guess electronic items are not categorized as hazardous materials as long as they dont have any acid batteries. Even if asked for receipt make sure that the packages are well placed so as that they dont like they belong to a single commuter.
