Hi guys, I impoted a hair clipper from U.S. Unpacked & plugged it in directly to mains. It made very loud sound, so I switched it off.
Afterwards it struck me that we needed to drop down the voltage to 120V & Wattage to 9W. Ran to the market & got a adapter that steps down the voltage to 110-120V & max. wattage is 50W.

Plugged in, the clipper still made loud sound, went back to market for replacement. Brought a new one & plugged the clipper in again. It still makes that very loud sound during operation. Now what to do, how to go about things?

Its a Wahl clipper & is pretty expensive.

Contact Wahl first. Tell them that you have travelled to India for a long work related matter and will not be return to US for a while and also that you bought this in US then explain your problem. You may skip the first part if you wish.

Thanks, I got in touch with Wahl India & they said that they don't offer Warranty/Gurantee/Repairs for imported products. I thought otherwise while buying but Wahl has turned out to be a looser company.

Took the machine to a local technician, he says that he would change the coil & that the clipper would work fine on 220V afterwards. He also says that it would not make such bad noise. The logic according to him is that Amperes have to be regulated too, which regular adapters don't do. Don't know how right/wrong he is!

Please suggest some solution guys...

Most chargers and power adapters bundled for devices such as cellphones, laptops, MiFi routers, shavers etc. have a 110-230V input voltage rating considering that the end customer may be on the move from country to country and the voltages may vary. Pretty surprising how Wahl decided to bundle a 110V adapter with a shaver!

The moment you plugged in the shaver into the 230V outlet and switched it on, the internal DC motor (and any related components) must have gone kaput/burnt. And must now be replaced as suggested by your local technician. Not sure if local technicians can do a good job at replacing the damaged parts.

The clipper model I bought is a direct plug in unit, not a rechargeable one. Company supplied no Adaptor, I got one from the local market, its called a convertor, converts 220V to 110V.

Before connecting the convertor, I did run the clipper directly for a couple of minutes. Its still runs directly or through convertor but makes an awful lot of noise. The local tech. says its because these gadgets are optimized to run on 110V, therefore its making so much noise & the motor is running at a greater speed because of higher current.

Solution he's suggesting is to change the COIL inside the Clipper that would make it run smoothly on 220V. Local hair saloon tells me that they get this done quite often!

*Update*

Took the Clipper to a local technician, he replaced the coil. Tried the CLipper, its working just fine. Total expense Coil + labour = 250/-
Coil was not a new piece though because Wahl parts are not available here.

Positive part is that now it works directly on 220V, no adapter/converter, etc. needed. Lets see how it performs...
