True Crypt

Can anyone tell what is truecrypt used for and how?

As I had visited their site but I was not able to understand it...

Secondly, Pls tell me a free utility which can hide a drive on my PC....

Lastly, I have recently installed Opera 11 but everytime I open a new website it asks me to verify its certificate and everytime I reload the page, it asks again which is very annoying. Pls help me to solve it too.

Thanks in advance...

^Ah well, it provides an encrypted file system that can be on a raw device or as a file on another file system. If by hide you means completely vanished then you have to delete it, but if you mean inaccessible then truecrypt will help you.

THanks but can anybody tell how to do this via true crypt....

Pls also help in this...?

It lets you create a container file/volume which is password protected. The size of this volume could be anything. When you mount it inside Truecrypt then it shows as a virtual partition in your system to which you can move/ copy/ paste/ create & delete any kind of file just like a regular partition... Once unmounted the virtual partition is gone but your files are there encrypted inside the container file...

All this happens on the fly, which means when you are modifying or accessing a file then the data is decrypted for you.... I have used something similar like this called DriveCrypt....

^is it safe, means if i encrypt some data, and if my os somehow gets corrupt, then can i still recover those file, or they are gone?

All these "true crypt" stuff have backdoors in them :)

Trust me. I have sources inside all the military signals intelligence (SIGINT) communities of the world ;-)

AES (128, 192 and 256 bit block size Rijndael algorithm with random Initialisation Vectors) is crackable by the more powerful government agencies, so if you want to hide something - HIDE IT IN PLAIN SIGHT!

They don't call those cryptographically strong random number generators as PSEUDO random number generators for no reason :D

Ask me. I know. After all, I AM THE GLOBAL MORAL POLICE yeah baby yeah!

BTW "A.E.S." stands for Advanced Encryption Standard which was selected by the USA's NIST division. FYI.

@vishalrao

the OP just want to hide some stuffs, no need for AES or DES :P

@OP

Softwares like folderguard can get your job done, easy and simple. Not too much advanced encryption algorithm involved, but 99% effective against common users if thats what you want:P

Just type in the master password to unlock or show the preset hidden folders anywhere on ur HDD. And to run the folderguard without putting any icon, just put its shortcud in any folder/subfolder in the start menu with status hidden under file properties, so that it doesnt show up in start menu, and set a shorcut hotkey like ctrl+shift+f. You can launch the app from desktop by just pressing that hotkey :)

Well, OP can just lock his HDDs full of pron inside his cupboard no? Isn't that much safer?

That's why I said... hide it in plain sight :D

True crypt is really easy to use.download it and read help.it has a really nice tutorial with screenshots.i am going to explain how it works to encrypt a container(system encryption and partition encryption is also possible but a bit advanced). First the program wizard will ask you to create a secure container i.e. choose the size and location of secure container on your drive.lets suppose you choose to name the file avatar.avi and place it in your movies folder choosing a size of 2 gb.Now this 2 gb space will be written by random data and is available for use.the file will just lie in your movies folder ,you can copy it to other drives or cd.now when you start truecrypt you have to mount the container by selecting it and by providing the password.the container will appear as a partition on your MY COMPUTER location.you can drag and drop files in your container.they are encrypted on the fly.when you are finished hiding or accessing data you can unmount the drive.simple enough!

Now to answer the poster about doubting true crypt.true crypt is totally open source and the code is available for inspection.Bruce SCHEINNER who is an independent authority on encryption has studied the code and found no backdoors.the writers of the code are totally anonymous and do not reveal their identity.In cryptographic software open source code is always better to rule out backdoors provided a competent person examines it.A private company may build a back door in software and may be forced by the law or social engineering to reveal the backdoor.

True crypt can use AES, AES+twofish,AES+twofish+serpent algorithms.These are very strong encryption standards.I think this post has become too long,dont want to go into details of cryptology but the BRAZIL SECRET SERVICE and THE FBI have failed to break truecrypt.There is some talk on the internet about NSA building a 100,000 k supercomputer botnet to crack advanced encryption but we dont know its existence or its capabilities for sure.I am sure nobody in india can break truecrypt provided the passphrase is secure and random.Search on the net for FBI FAILS TO CRACK TRUECRYPT.its intereting reading.More questions on encryption are welcome!
