TSMC Cranks Up Dual-Core ARM to 3.1GHz

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company has announced today that its advanced ARM® Cortex™-A9 dual-core 28nm manufactured using HPM (high performance for mobile applications) process test chip achieved 3.1GHz under typical test conditions .

The ARM chips are usually clocked ranging upto 1.5GHz , so this territory is completely new for them . This will be a heads up for Intel as well .

“At 3.1 GHz this 28HPM dual-core processor implementation is twice as fast as its counterpart at TSMC 40nm under the same operating conditions,†said Cliff Hou, TSMC Vice President, Research & Development.

“This work demonstrates how ARM and TSMC can satisfy high performance market demands. With other implementation options, 28HPM is also highly suited for a wide range of markets that prize performance and power efficiency.â€

The ARM A9 28HPM delivers perfromance ranging from 1.5GHz to 2GHz suitable for mobile computing, and up to 3.1GHz for high-performance uses .

So in future we can expect ARM chips coming at higher frequencies and offering higher performance efficiency .
