Tutorial for installing wi-fi at home

Please explain in layman's terms step-by-step.

I hear that it is easy to install wi-fi at home.

My house is 1200 sq ft.

Desktop is P3, with 512mb ram.

I've a 24/7 unlimited broadband service.

Broadband is youtele, with dynamic IP.

Broadband service has given a modem which is connected to CPU through USB

1 desktop,1 laptop,1 nerbook will be accessed.

1. Which router is the best and what price?

( the vendor showed me routers for DLonk,belkin for rs.2000/- but he said they will work best for 800 sq ft. but i think the rs.2000 routers will also work for 1200 sq ft right?)

1. Choose any router from a good company such as Dlink or Belkin, you should be fine but ensure that they are G+ rated atleast. The question is not how large your house is, its where the router is located and the layout of your rooms as the signal doesn't go through walls. If you position the router at the center of the house you should be fine for 1200 sq feet.

2. & 3. - Don't worry about that. Most routers come with install guides which are make it a breeze to install the router and enable encryption. All you have to do is plug the modem into the router, the router into the PC and then follow the on screen instructions. When adding encryption remember to use WPA atleast. WEP is more easier to crack and the key is difficult to memorize so avoid it.

4. Since your modem connects via USB, it won't be possible to connect that to the wireless router. You'll need to call Youtele and ask them how to connect their modem via a simple LAN cable to your PC or router, your router should be able to handle it then.

Apart from that, I'm guessing your laptop and netbook has Wifi so that won't really be an issue when connecting to the router. But your PC has 2 options-
a. Connect the PC directly to the router via a LAN cable - That way your PC won't require a WiFi card and get direct "wired access" to the router. The -ve point of this is that you will have to keep the router next to the PC.
b. Buy a WiFi card for your PC. It will cost you around 750rs+. You will now be able to connect the PC wirelessly to the router like the laptop or netbook.
 
RD274 has answered all your queries. Only thing to remember is the connection -

Internet Connection---->Modem--->Router---->PC/Laptops/Wi-Fi devices

Since I had bought a Belkin router with absolutely zero knowledge about setting up a wireless network, it is a piece of cake. Just follow the instructions and get it done! :)

I have a Pronet WiFi router at home which is kept on the first floor, but still I can connect to WiFi and browse while am on the ground floor. The signal does pass through the slab of concrete :)

r u sure i cannot connct this modem to router.

actually i dont want to call youtele, i'm sure they'll charge for it

can u give some idea about configuring/settings once the router is attached.

for e.g youtele service connects through dialer, it has dynamic ip and no details such as DNS subnetmask etc

I'm pretty sure you can't. You need to connect the modem to the router via a LAN cable. Why don't you check your modem and see if it has a network cable port (RJ45 port) as well. My friend had an old Motorola modem which has USB and Network cable support so yours might be the same.

If it has a network cable port then I guess you'll just have to call Youtele over and ask them to install the modem to the PC via that way and you'll probably be charged 100 bucks for the cable.

If it doesn't have a network cable support, I'm guessing you'll have to upgrade your modem. Sorry ....

The thing is that youtele offers wifi service separately, so if i call them they'll know i'm doin this on my own.

Big deal. Tell them you want to connect the router to your PC via LAN cable as you are facing motherboard problems and USB ports are malfunctioning + one pen drive is already damaged (make up some story!).

First get your modem connected to PC via a LAN cable, then we'll see.... :bleh:
