Need help on the tuner card.

My PC monitor went bust. I dont want to buy a new one. I have a sony lcd tv with me. And currently i have connected my PC to my TV. I have an airtel DTH connection. Planning to go HD soon. I want it to be routed through my PC so i can record those great matches and races.
Does anyone know a good TV tuner card with recording facility and the 3 pin AV input?
I can spend max 6K

Do you want to record in HD or SD? And how old is your computer? Does your computer have a pcie slot? HD capable tuners require a x1 or x4 slot minimum.

And unfortunately if you require a HD capable tuner the least they come for is around 6.5k from Avermedia. The rest support full hd input but support only dvd quality recording. These are available from Rs 1.2k onwards. Both as usb based as well as internal type.

And third costliest type is the Hauppauge/Aver hd pvr which is around 10k imported. Or you could just forget all this and buy the HDPVR from Reliance/Tata/Airtel which come for 5k. You wont be able to transfer the contents to pc though.

i have bad news for you on this.

I also have airtel dth and avermedia card.

It does not allow to record, ehenever we hit record now in avermedia or windows media center.

It gives error---this signal is for viewing only and recording prohibited.

I would prefer recording in HD. My computer is new. about 4 months old. have the HDMI arrangement. I dont have PCIe. Cant i do it with my HDMI cable. I used to connect my computer to my tv using HDMI. Or need PCIe is required for HD capabale tuners?

Is it for all products? I was thinking that these boxes do allow us to record n wath later as claimed by the adverts on tv. If it is possible to record, wont the computer should be abl;e to do the same?

Seems like you're using the hdmi cable as input. That means the output from stb via hdmi is encrypted. You will have to use the component out from stb to record.

HD recorders require a pcie slot. the pci slot do not have enough bandwidth to let them perform. You cant use hdmi. like the above poster said hdmi is encrypted.

The only option you have is to buy those external pvr from avermedia or hauppauge. The Aver comes for around $120 and the Hauppauge comes for $189. Both are similar in video quality. The difference is in audio. Aver records in stereo, whereas the Hauppauge records in dolby. both have option of transferring content to pc via usb i think.

Edit: On a side note hope you have atleast 1Tb free hdd space. HD recording takes huge amount of space - like 1-2Gb for half hour video depending on bitrate.

Can you let me know of a good one both in USB & PCI-e 4x ..

Hi,
To check up on the recording and transfering content to Pc i visited avermedia website. Came across two categories of products
1)Home free AV plus
2)Capture SDK
Home free AV plus also talks about streaming. But not clear if i will be able to record.
Like Teh Fawlty guy said, capture SDK devices look like it will be connected through PCIe.

but i did read a disclaimer in Hauppauge products saying it wont be able to record encrypted files from stb. Also Hauppauge will record at 1080i where as Avermedia does it in 1080p

mine is normal standard definition set top box(plain vanilla dth set top box).

Buy AVerMedia | AVerTV Super 009M733 WMC video

i was connecting over normal rca cable.i managed to record one or two programs fine and in that time their was some set top box update and all my fun ended.

after that update ,whenever i tried to record,i was greeted with this message that content for viewing only, recording prohoboted.

even after installing playready update to windows media center,i was unable to record.

when i searched online ,its knows error reported over many places under this set up and its airtel to blame as they put encryption on stream.it was time when they started with their dvr box .

I feel,In united states which has fierce copyright protection,it does allow you to even record High def and make one copy of recorded content for your own consumption and in india we are not even allowed to record our standard definition stuff.

thanks to Failtel

that to promote their own dvr boxes.afaik they are not prohibited by content provider.

I know someone from viacom and i discussed with him.

He was like as long as we are getting our subscription fee,we are not encrypting our content for copy protection in user end.

according to him, this was airtel crapping on dth recorder's like us.

Avermedia records in 1080i only. Most HD tv/dish providers broadcast in 720p or 1080i.

Amazon.com: AVerMedia MTVUHDDVR Avertv HD USB Digital Video Recorder: Electronics

@pratikb, how can the analog signal be encrypted? then even tv cant be able to decode it.

@delhiboy, pcie cards are costly. please mention your budget too :)

You can look at ITwares list here on TE and make up your mind depending on your budget and requirements. Do remember that Most Aver cards do not have a hardware encoder on them. They will offload all load to cpu directly and hence you will require a dual core or quad core cpu to record content.

i will post screen shot of it.

I also did not understand it but thats what i encountered when i tried to record.

I did reinstall windows afterthat, even with clean install,I had that.

It clearly says that content for viewing only.

not for recording.

TV can show it as TV is just viewing it and not recording.

the one which i bought does hardware encoding.

Cheaper the better: 1.5-2kmax. USB or PCI also will do fine.

I have a pretty old & slow A64 3200+ (2GHZ) so definitely will need something that can encode on its own. Also , have a HD5450 installed in that machine, will that help? Please do let me know of some specific models..

^ AVerTV Super 009 (M733) or Hauppauge WinTV PVR-150 MCE

I dont have either of these two though. I have a tatasky hd pvr and an external tuner. The external tuner supports 1080i input. does not support record though.

And the internal hd tuner i bought has yet to arrive.

So you will have to take advice of people who have used the cards i mentioned above, to make your choice. :)

Greetings gentlemen !!

Hi to all, this is my first post as a member of TE after getting rejected once for membership:ashamed:.
I have been reading post's of TE from last few months which is truly an awesome forum created by Technoholics for Technoholics..

Now the problem of mine is that I got a old PC and wanted to reuse it as an light HTPC cum download system but have mighty problems relating to latest hardware's....in short i am a noob !!Specs of old PC are as :

CPU - AMD Athlon 3200+ ( Orleans Core AM2 Socket )
Mobo - MSI K9NGM-L( AM2 Socket )
Memory - Kingston KVR800D2N6/2G ( 2x2 Gb arranged in Dual slot configuration. )
GPU - Onboard
Sound - Onboard
PSU - 450 W ( Some local brand ...sorry don't remember the name ,will check it when i reach home.)
Cabinet - Mid Tower (Old Local Brand.)
HDD - Seagate Sata II ( 500 Gb )
OD - LG DVD Writer.

Standard Cable connection for TV.
2 PCI + PCI x16+ PCI x1 Slots are free right now the MOBO.

And all above hardware's are in working condition and i am thinking to get a TV Tuner card + MSI 5450.

Need a card that can do recordings in DVD rip quality or HD quality for future( I got cable connection so i don't think they ever show anything in HD).

Now as CPU is an old single core processor ...i thought to get this card ->AVerTV Super 009M733 WMC video ...will it be enough considering i need a card that can do cable recording of programs that i can store in PC. I will be using standard cable connection for it as Airtel DTH in my locality won't allow me to record on PC ( Got it confirmed from technician of Airtel.)

One more thing , i have never ever used a GPU so i have no basic knowledge of current GPU cards but i do know that NVidia is better than AMD's in games and heavy graphics related processing.I am not an gamer nor an programmer .....so will MSI 5450 fit in my Mobo MSI Global ? Mainboard - K9NGM

I don't know will the MOBO accept this card...it has PCI x16 slot.....can this GFX card be paired up with K9ngm-l Mobo of mine ?

Sorry for being a noob.....have been out of touch for last 5 years.

Thanks and Regards !
John.
