Hi I can't understand whats going on here
when i type ipconfig in command prompt I get a certain ip, however when I go to a website called whatismyip.com i get a different one. My ip does show up as different from the command prompt one whenever some website on the web shows my ip. However the ip that shows up in command prompt is the one supplied by my isp sify. And this is the ip i enter when configuring the lan properties.
Which is my real ip? Whats actually going on here?
Thanx.

dude probably ur under NAT protocol .. that means the ip ur hving in ipconfig is u local ip it shud be eiuther in 10.x.x.x. or 172.x.x.x. or 192.x.x.x. format .. and the ip ur seeing in whatismyip.com is the external routers address.

In case you need a complicated answer then read on....

Like x86 said the IP that you are getting from whatismyip is the IP address of the service provider, that is sify.

Since it is not possible to have dedicated IP address for all the net users in the world.. there is a method called NAT (network address translation).

The IP ranges that x86 has mentioned 10.x.x.x 172.x.x.x and 192.168.x.x are the private IP ranges which can be used without permission internally in a LAN. ALso known as Private IP address.

This way you just need one IP address (public IP address) to connect to the internet and then connect a number of users (in private IP address domain) using NAT with the same IP. For outside world all the users in that LAN will have same IP address.

Ok ok cool. Ok just one more thing, if I want to give my frnds my ip address, say for a game of cs that i'm hosting or say a direct connection on limewire, what ip address should I give them?

if you want to play game with your friend then you need to give him your external IP. not 10.x.x.x

10.x.x.x is the addrss that you will need to enter into your LAN card configuration.

Hope that answers your question.

The external ip is the one im getting in whatismyip.com right?

And the port will remain the same right? As in when loging in to a server, you need to specify the port, eg 210.x.x.x:27015, so like this port will not change right? Ill give them the external ip(whatismyip.com) along with :27015?

Thanx.

external ip wont work until the specific port is forwarded.. i'd say u invite ur frnd rather than giving him the ip ..

priyo u cant forward your port unless u have access to the routers web interface.
i would suggest you request the admin to do that for you .. before find out the specifi port or the range which css uses.

O ok ok, thanx a lot, i'm guessing in my case the admin is the local cable operator who supplies the connection to me, the guy in charge of the ip which is the default gateway for my internet.

dont worry. sify does not block default port of HL2/css which is 27015( guessing its HL2/CSS bcoz 27015 is default port for that game).

that post is open on the ISP side.

All you need to do is exempt the ports needed for the css dedicated server in your firewall and give your ip to the friend.

i hosted server and still do. it works.

The posts that you need to exempt on local computer firewall are.

UDP 1200 (Friends Network)

UDP 27000 to 27015 (Gameport)

UDP 27020

TCP 27030 to 27039

TCP: 27015 (SRCDS Rcon port)

You on sify too? And you put in your external ip right? And dude please give me some good indian servers where i can play cs 1.6 (uses the same port, 27015), I keep getting booted out of those uk servers and all coz of my high latency.
Thanx.
