Hey guys last night I did a fresh installation of ubuntu 10.10 ... Kept the updates running over night as my net is not too fast :( . In the morning I checked the update manager to have completed its task of dwnloading the updates [only security and recommended ones] and then I restarted . Now the boot screen comes with ubuntu loading and then goes black and doesnt respond . Any fixes for this kind of error?

If you see grub menu before boot, then press E to get the boot line, there remove the "quiet splash" text and press CTRL+X to boot.

This should print all the kernel messages to get an idea where its failing.

If you dont see grub menu, press a key (like SHIFT) during early bootup to bring the menu then try the above.

Alternatively, what is your graphics card? And are you using proprietary driver or normal opensource one?

you can try adding "nomodeset modeset=0" while removing the "quiet splash" part to see if that makes a difference.

Well I had no hardware problems so seeing the POST kind of thing didnt help . So booted into safe mode and then chose the startup without Graphics drivers . Reloaded the ATi drivers and now its working fine . BTW can you tell me will I face same problems if I move to ArchLinux cause of ATi card?

Most probably the ati drivers module might not have got recreated for the newer kernel during the update. The issue is not specific to any distro.

I read that ubuntu has native support for ati while other distro dont support it ... is it actually that?
It does. But you'll have to activate it and then the driver is downloaded and installed or you can directly get the linux driver from ATI site.

PS: i'm a linux n00b :ashamed:

cant say native support...it provides download option via jockey interface to enable ati binary drivers..

Not sure of ati but nvidia drivers are preloaded in powerpack version of mandriva, that can be called as native support :)

yeah maybe not native but read that drivers show problem on other distros .... Major concern for me as after ATi Stream this might be another reason I might have to give the card away :( .
