Linux Ubuntu 11.04 ATI performance fix?

Guys I'm not able to enjoy unity with full eye-candy as the performance is choppy.

Here's the list of things I've tried.

1.Disable Sync to VBlank and Detect Refresh rate in CCSM.

It improved performance to an extent, the Unity Dock does not lag now but window dragging is still slow.

2.I tried removing default fglrx driver and installing ATI official catalyst 11.4 driver as I saw this recommended in some forum.

This only created more problems as I could not log in with Unity but only with Ubuntu classic. So I reverted to default drivers.

Is there any fix for these problems,or are they working on it?.I really want it to run smooth.

Some Other Info:

I upgraded from Ubuntu 10.10 64-bit to 11.04 64 bit.Update went smooth.Booting is a little weird, screen is blank for some time and then the loading ubuntu screen appears for an instant and then the login screen appears.Boot time not that impressive definitely slower than 10.10.

you may want to do a fresh install instead of upgrade. Upgrade is known to cause many issues. You can do a parallel install by creating another partition to check if it works fine.

hmm...I was hoping no one would say that. Thanks for the parallel install idea though.I think I'll try that. Will it suffice if i try the "try ubuntu without installing" option?IIRC there was an option like that in Maverick.

Yes, ubuntu 11.04 does not play nice with radeon cards.

On my Laptop with ati6630m + intel sandy bridge dual graphics, it works fine while installing and the first boot after install.

But after that, It gets suspended mid-boot, leaving me with an ugly stack trace splattered with radeon all over.

tried it 3rice wit ubuntu 10.04 x64 & once with edubuntu 11.04 x64

^^ graphics switching is not yet supported for ati/intel cards properly. you can disable either one in bios and install ubuntu. there are some hacks available to enable the graphics switching but its still requires x server restart and manual switching.

well when i upgraded from 10.10 to 11.04 I had faced a problem with old drivers .. but 11.04 working fine for me .. am running HD5870 on it for time being .

Guys i did a fresh install and but the window dragging is still slow. After this i tried all the fixes i tried previously but it dint help, still can't turn on effects like wobbly windows, they're not smooth. Is there any way to use daily builds of compiz and the ATI driver and make it work with unity.?Will it help performance if I do that.?It Ruins the whole point of linux for me when I can't experiment with the interface. Please help.

thanks but i already tried that.I don't see much of a difference when i change it.I've listed all the things I've tried out in my first post.I'm giving up now,i can manage with the current performance.Hopefully it'll get resolved in future updates.

For this you can use ubuntu tweak to add the repositories and for other problems just install Xchat and goto the ubuntu IRC they are very helpful and this being a common issue should be resolved there fast :) .
