Linux Ubuntu for netbook

Ok so got a netbook for sis, with Win 7 starter edition (sucks a lot of things are disabled etc).

Now can I multi-boot simply in Ubuntu? The windows 7 partition should not be affected as I dont have an external DVD-ROM drive, and it would be a big headache to install Win 7 using USB pen drive...

I am asking as all my last attempts at using Linux in the past 7 years have resulted in a huge loss of data with partitions disappearing. But I suppose will have a re-run when I get a new HDD. However the netbooks dont have any optical drive, and installing Windows through a pendrive is painful to say the least.

Why is installing windows a pain :S
All you need is the OS iso + http://images2.store.microsoft.com/prod/clustera/framework/w7udt/1.0/en-us/Windows7-USB-DVD-tool.exe

Also, like nishantgandhi pointed out, all information you need is available at the ubuntu download page itself.
