Ubuntu, touted as the most newbie friendly linux os has gone through some radical changes for the upcoming LTS (Long Term Support) Release code named Lucid Lynx (10.04). Canonical behind ubuntu has now rebranded Ubuntu by provided a new look and a whole new logo. The new look was slated for debut in past couple of releases but failed due to many reasons. But now its all set for release with the upcoming 10.04.

Ubuntu's distinctive brown look dates back to the very first version of the distribution, which was released in 2004. Although the style has evolved considerably since then and new colors like orange gradually gained a foothold in the desktop palette, brown has been the dominant color of Ubuntu's default themes for the past five years. Lets take a quick look at the changes in the upcoming 10.04

1. Slick boot up powered by Plymouth

2. Dumps the browne/orange with a refreshing new theme and wallpaper.

3. Complete overhaul of the website using the stock icon set.

Anything's better than xsplash. Need to check Plymouth (not sure if it works under Nvidia though)

Tbh, I neither like the logo nor the default look. The logo looks rather bland & incomplete and the look obviously reminds of Mac.

Oh sweet.... I knew this was coming soon, but did not see it yet when I updated this morning. Website still shows the old stuff...

When is it due to be released to public? I mean, when will I actually see this stuff in my installation? During Beta1 time?

I will be following this thread: New Theme Revealed - Ubuntu Forums :)

update: oh shite! it just stuck me. i have to throw away all those stickers i bought and buy new ones now :D

It will, till you use nuoveau the default driver in 10.04. Once you make the switch to proprietary driver its all text :P

plymouth will also work with nvidia proprietary driver just that you need to run vesa framebuffer kernel module (which will happen auto i believe) and the "mode set" will not be smooth thats all.

The top Status bar and wallpaper is VERY Apple inspired. Heck they even used the same Wifi and Bluetooth icons!

Looks sleek and professional though..

I appreciate Ubuntu for what it is and I use it on my home PC. But I don't see why imitating looks is a good thing -- and cant for the life of me fathom why they had to move the min-max-close buttons to the left like Mac OS X.

Ubuntu at the outer basic level works more like Windows for the user (the controls, the keyboard shortcuts, etc). While Gnome always aired a Mac OS like feeling, I don't think making it more Mac like -- without purpose -- serves any good.

Everyone wants to imitate the Mac. What's the point? First Windows and now Ubuntu.

This still looks good though.
