5 volts with memory card or usb hdd? what about casing the board ? which specific linux distor are u using - ubuntu ?

Without the hdd. You will need separate power for such peripherals. Well it doesn't exactly need a casing, lego blocks as an enclosure will do just fine. There are casings available, but not in India. Ubuntu works on it although I use Angstrom on it, that's the preferred choice since it has a smaller footprint than Ubuntu. But there a lot of Ubuntu users as well.

Just a word of caution though: it does require some tweaking to set up according to your needs, so it isn't exactly mainstream.

It does not have ethernet or Wifi, AFAIK

Yes it doesn't have any onboard ethernet/wifi. But usb ethernet/wifi adapters work, connected to a usb hub.

Also there's another such board, with onboard ethernet and works with CRT monitors. Check out AM1808 / OMAP L 138 Open Community Portal — hawkboard.org

It seems cheaper than beagle board, retails for about 5k. not sure how its cheaper ?
IDA Systems - Hawkboard

Beagleboard has better specs and uses faster processor & is more versatile.

Also, you need to know that there are two USB ports. The other one is USB OTG, which gets me to another point that the board can be powered by connecting a mini USB cable to a PC also. Again, one port can be used for attaching a self-powered USB hub, so there's no problem in connecting the various peripherals - NICs etc.

I think for a time being I will stick with asus wl-520gu-which will also act as a wireless router and will be more mainstream then the other options. If I use my pendrive with this kind of setup - will it damage the pendrive -as while downloading-seeding continuous read-write operation will be going on the pd

^^ yup.. ur pendrive will wear out soon..

btw good call on choosing the router.. it is much more value for money and much more support available and least number of connections/wires.. Plus least amount of power usage..We always fail by comparing things saying this is much more powerful and stuff and i can use it for this also and that also.. if u want a download rig it doesnt get better than the asus router in any terms (power/cost etc).. then some think, oh i'll get a beagleboard, it will also allow me to connect a monitor, then another says oh atom is better i can use as secondary desktop, then another guy, wow let me play movies also and before u know you are running a dual core CPU with 8800GT.. :P

yeah,,sometime its better to be specific with requirement only. Now what kind of usb hdd are you using your router-download rig ?,as I read somewhere this setup only support usb powered hdd only.

i am trying to get a quote for a go on the guruplug server plus. it is what a backend server should be like... excellent choice for a seedbox/nas/ftp and web server too. will keep you guys posted if we can get like 15-20 buyers here then it just might work out...

That would be great. Did you get a response from Globalscale? Cause I sent them many mails and didn't receive a single reply. Doesn't seem to be that good with customer service.

Anyway even if you order 3 plugs the shipping rate would remain almost the same so it will come to around 6.5k or less per plug.

^ yes the company is pretty lame as far as response times go but then they have rights to such a killer product... we would go any lengths to get them ;-p

too early to say how this pans out, but have my fingers crossed... more like a bulk order which can then be shipped in one box and then to rightful owners here in india once it reaches...

on the contrary, the support for usb-powered hdds is flaky.. It will support all the HDDs that are externally powered but I am guessing it is not able to give out a lot of current through the USB port, so not all USB-powered discs work..
From what I've tried till now, all flash drives work and so do most 1.8" external HDDs.. But 2.5" HDDs are a hit and a miss..(maybe more of an enclosure issue instead of the disc itself because of current consumption)

so 1.8" external hdds - does all laptop hdds are of 1.8" or 2.5"..

I can't use flash drive in a long run - as it will kill the flash drive pretty soon..

supporting Shantanu's opinion... i found using externally powered usb hdd to yield better response times. the flip side however, is that the disk spins continuously. i found the lower powered laptop internal hdds to be better off for this reason to use with a usb casing. no point going for the 7200rpm 3.5" hdds...

and if you can spend a little more on the router, go for a higher powered Buffalo WZR-HP-G300NH which is priced around 4k and can be flashed to dd-wrt, oleg or tomato alike !

it varies.. you can buy a 1.8" enclosure and 1.8" disc easily in market though.. transcend makes a lot of them.. i think their 18u line in 1.8" and 25u is 2.5"

Not necessarily. You have various utilities (e.g. the sg_* utils in oleg) that can allow you to spin down the HDDs when not in use.. However, they might not work for all enclosures but generally any good brand enclosure will work..
And this would be true for externally as well as USB powered ones..

I can use my seagate 80gb ide with an external enclosure -> any suggestion for a tried n tested enclosure for this .. or I need to buy a laptop hdd+enclosure (suggestion please).

how about Buffalo WZR-HP-G300NH - can I add more number of torrents here as only ONE in asus wl-520gu

thats insightful... well i tried a usb hdd with dd-wrt and tomato... spin down was causing hangups. some issue with optimisation in the f/w perhaps. am a noob at linux so couldnt achieve much at that end. and then i realized that 99% of the time, torrents for me are working... seeding mostly so the drive needs be spinning anyways... so honestly, didnt bother much...

over time and with a decent amount of tweaking, transmission client works best on these embedded systems when you have lesser number of open connections or files. i go with 3 active d/ls and 8-10 uploads at all times. the global peer limit has been set to 60 with maximum peer per torrent is set at 20. the number of active open files is not more than 50 and upload slots per torrent have been restricted to 4 per torrent. this setting has worked fine on 520gu but then issues come up while you streaming or copying data off it. with the higher proc wzr-hp-g300nh, i think you can manage this without an issue.
