now i have moved on to ubuntu , but i wanted to share my windows experience wid u
first thing.
make a bootable xp DVD AND NOT CD.(use nlite, rvm addons etc)
we all know access speeds of dvd are much higher than a cd.trust me on this , u will never make a bootable cd again , always a dvd. watch ur installation fly!!!!
this is what i did to make my pc fastest without spending a single dime on hardware.
1. attach the new (blank)hd to ur existing computer(or ur frnds)
2. boot into it , use diskmgmt.msc to configure ur new hd.mine is 160 gb , u can change the values proportionally.
3. make partitions as follows
a>windows partition-> nothing else goes here , only windows xp. this will be fastest drive of ur hd(c:\). i have 13 GB set aside for it , and it is 70% empty.while formating it select largest FRAGMENT SIZE
of 64 kb. do a quick ntfs format
b>pro grammes partition->nothing else goes here , only pro grammes.can be 20gb. double(triple) it if u play a lot of games. it will be second fastest drive of ur pc(d:\) while formating it select largest FRAGMENT SIZE
of 64 kb. do a quick ntfs format
c>media partition-> only user data goes here.we shall move "my documents" folder to this drive. this will take up all rest of ur hd.make it a defult ntfs quick format
4. if it was ur frnd's pc then detach ur hd and bring it to ur pc.set it to boot disk from bios. if it was ur own pc , then u can change boot disk to new hd from windows(this will leave mbr as it is i.e. ur previous installation is untouched) or u can leave it as it is(this will make u select the windows to boot into during startup and overwrite ur mbr, other than that ur previous installation is safe).
(steps 5,6 are now lost!!!)
7. boot into ur XP DVD. start installation.
format no partition
install windows in c:
make sure that u do not reformat ur partitions.
instead"LEAVE IT AS IT IS"
8. have a coffee or a playboy handy and watch xp installation FLY
notice the difference in installation speed.
9. boot into new c: windows .now u got fresh windows installed in FASTEST AND BIGGEST FRAGMENT SIZE partition.
10. do not install any update packs service packs yet.
12. shift ur my documents into e:/ by right clicking it on desktop.
make a new folder in ur d:called "installed"
13. open regedit . goto local machine->Microsoft->windows->current version.
select programesfilesdir. modify it to "d:\installed"
14. now install sp2(if needed) . autopatcher xp(if needed).
all new files goto d:\ installed folder by default now and ur windows partition will now remain unpolluted.
15. right click on all ur partitions and disable indexing.
select all files and folders
if any warning comes then "ignore all"
16. install all drivers now(not from motherboard cd but fully updated from internet)
18. install all ur softwares , games etc etc. all will go by default in d:/
notice the difference in speed while installing, no need of playboy now.
19. install advanced windows care
select optimize. it will do all sorts of cleaning.
most importantly it will disable/put to manual all the unnecessary services.
no need to manually edit services.msc or msconfig!!!!
20. use windows to ur own preference for a few days.fully customize it.
21. edit sysoc.ini file in windows partition.
select and delete all instances of "hide" from the file
save it.
remove all the programmes from windows components list in add remove programs(trust me none is necessary , but u can always install them bak if needed by clicking on them again.
22. goto advanced windows care again scan it , now goto startup entries. disable all unnecessary ones(except antiruses etc.)
23. download autoruns from sysinternals. run it as admin
look for entries with "file not found" marked
delete all those entries.
24. remove all previous restore points from disk cleanup
25 download auslogics disk defrag. defrag c:\ , d:\ (no need for other partition.)
watch defrag with this free utility in SUPERFAST SPEED.
26 .remove any log in password for now so that windows automatically logs into desktop
download bootvis. run it and select optimize system.
it wil restart ur pc. do not touch ur pc for say 5 min.
now put bak ur login password.
25 restart ur pc. enjoy fastest ever bootup performance
enjoy fastest ever xp performance.
26 do all the regular tweaks(disabling visual effects etc etc.)
27 .well bootvis was to be used only once thus if is useless now.
now how to maintain ur pc. do the following regularly
clean junk . i recommend crapcleaner.remove all previous restore points by disk cleanup.
clean registry. i recommend advanced windows care and regseeker.
defragment. only c:/ , d:/ need defrag . defrag them daily by auslogics disk defrag
give ur windows autoruns treatment(remove dead entries)
advantages.
1 defrag only c:/ , d:/ colon , no need to defrag e:/(but u can defrag it also to satisfy the haker in u)
2. reinstall xp preserves ur data + programmes
3. new data(songs/movies) doesn't slows down ur programmes(different partition)
4. new programmes do not slow down ur windows(diff partition)
5. windows and programmes are installed in partition with greatest possible fragment size. it will increase copy/paste/installing speed of those drives.
or even better install ubuntu and forget all those hacks.
